British shale gas reserves double. Will the UK frack?

Estimates of shale gas resources in the North of England are double that of previous estimate, according to a new report. Britain?s shale industry is still very young, Burgess writes, and as it has not been determined whether any gas can be economically extracted, it may never actually grow to maturity.?

The shale formation, known as the Bowland shale formation has been calculated to hold around 1,300 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Considering that BP reports British consumption as 2.76 trillion cubic feet in 2012, this formation is enough to transform the UK energy market, even though only 10-15 percent of shale gas reserves is generally recoverable.

Danny Alexander, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, stated that??today?s news from the Geological Survey confirms 1,300 trillion cubic feet of (shale resources), which is double previous estimates.?

Fracking has come under some scrutiny by environmentalists and local communities who are worried that it could lead to earthquakes and contamination of ground water and drinking water supplies.

Related article:?European Resistance to Gazprom is Futile

To try and appease local communities the government has said that companies must invest ?100,000 in communities near to fracking wells, along with a further one percent of all revenues earned from each production site.

Energy Minister Michael Fallon, explained that??this will provide a welcome boost for communities who will host shale exploration and production as well as offering strong assurances that operators will engage with them and work to the highest health, safety and environmental standards.?

Britain?s shale industry is still very young and as it has not been determined whether any gas can be economically extracted, it may never actually grow to maturity.

Unbelievable: Outrageous Avatar Of US Embassy Riyadh Twitter Account

You can see it here, blown up in a tweet by someone urging it be taken down:

Is this administration so under the sway of the Saudis that we have our Embassies using their flags on our twitter accounts, and putting their flag on equal level with our flag, a complete and utter violation of U.S. flag protocol? Not to mention the sword positioned with point toward the flag and any other symbolism in the Saudi flag, apparently being endorsed.

We had Embassy officials in Cairo that apologize for being attacked, and don?t answer information on dead Americans after 10 p.m..

Now we have this Embassy account debasing us still further? Take it down!

Obamas to meet Mandela family, not visit hospital

PRETORIA (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will meet on Saturday with relatives of anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela, but they will not visit the hospital where the former South African president is critically ill, the White House said.

Obama is in South Africa on the second stop of a three-nation Africa tour. His visit had triggered intense speculation that the United States' first African-American president might visit 94-year-old Mandela in the Pretoria hospital where he has spent three weeks being treated for a lung infection.

"Out of deference to Nelson Mandela's peace and comfort and the family's wishes, they will not be visiting the hospital," the White House said in a statement.

The Obamas would meet privately with members of the Mandela family "to offer their thoughts and prayers at this difficult time," the statement added.

Since starting his Africa tour in Senegal on Thursday, Obama has paid fulsome tribute to the man globally admired as a symbol of struggle against injustice and of racial reconciliation for the way he led South Africa out of centuries of white-minority rule.

The U.S. president has called Mandela a "personal hero" and is due to make a tour on Sunday of Robben Island, the former penal colony where South Africa's first black president passed 18 of the 27 years he spent in apartheid jails.

Obama held bilateral talks on Saturday in Pretoria with South African President Jacob Zuma.

Peace Light Memorial to be rededicated by Sons of Union Veterans? Camp 43

KITTANNING ? Members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, John T. Crawford Camp 43 will be doing their part to honor the memory of veterans who fought in the various battles of Gettysburg 150 years ago.

Richard Essenwein, state department commander and Camp 43 graves registration officer, said Camp 43 members will join with other Sons units at Gettysburg this weekend for the SUVCW's annual department encampment, a business session, and a re-dedication of the Peace Light Memorial. Various Sons groups will stay at the Eisenhower Inn and Conference Center.

?On Saturday we will be on the battlefield to rededicate the Peace Light Memorial,? Essenwein said. ?It was first dedicated by President Franklin Roosevelt 75 years ago as a memorial to all the brothers and sisters we lost in the Battle of Gettysburg, to a nation reunited, and to eternal peace. It will be a very somber and moving ceremony.?

Essenwein said that during such annual gatherings, the Sons make donations to charitable organizations in the towns in which they meet ? this year, in Gettysburg. One charity is selected by the state department's patriotic instructor and a second is selected by the ladies' auxiliary.

?Originally the charitable donations were presented at a campfire ceremony,? he said. ?But the parks department has regulations prohibiting fires on the battlefield, so the presentations will be made at the Conference Center. Camp 43 is proud and honored to play a role in this historic and solemn event.?

Britain's shale gas firms to offer host communities sweeteners

LONDON (Reuters) - Companies that explore for shale gas in Britain have pledged to provide sweeteners worth 100,000 pounds to communities located near exploratory wells and 1 per cent of revenues from each production site, the government said on Thursday.

"Companies have pledged to engage with communities early (prior to any application for planning permission), and to provide community benefits in areas where shale is commercially extracted," the Department of Energy and Climate Change said in a statement.

"These will include 100,000 pounds for communities situated near each exploratory (hydraulically fracked) well, and 1 percent of revenues from every production site," it said.

'Lola' tops 204 mph, breaking electric vehicle land speed record

Autos

Drayson Racing team members celebrate their land speed record.

The Detroit Bureau

Drayson Racing team members celebrate their land speed record.

With all the emphasis on electric propulsion these days, it might seem hard to believe that it?s been 39 years since General Electric ? yes, GE ? set the FIA World Electric Land Speed Record. But that achievement has finally been bested by a sleek, Le Mans Prototype dubbed ?Lola.?

On an RAF airbase in Yorkshire, England, an 850-horsepower battery-electric built by Drayson Racing hit a top speed of 204.185 miles per hour during a pair of runs down a 3-kilometer (nearly 2-mile) track. That was a full 29 mph faster than the 175 mph record set way back in 1974 by the Battery Box General Electric.

?I?m delighted we?ve beaten the record tonight and can show the world EVs can be fast and reliable,? said Lord Paul Drayson, whose firm built the 2,200 battery, and who personally piloted it during the record run. ?It is not the outright speed of 204.185 mph that is most impressive about this record, but the engineering challenge of accelerating a 1000 kilogram electric vehicle on a short runway over a measured mile.?

Officially known as the Drayson B12 69/EV the enclosed racer used ultra-light carbon fiber for its chassis and body to compensate for the heft of a 30 kilowatt-hour battery pack. It also relied on custom-designed Michelin LM P1 tires.

Though most folks likely associate electric propulsion with ? but slow ? vehicles like the Nissan Leaf or Chevrolet Volt, the reality is that battery power can also deliver some impressive performance as an electric motor yields maximum torque the moment it starts spinning.

Drayson?s Lola can launch from 0 to 60 in less than 4 seconds, for example, and keep gaining speed until it?s pushed well past 200 mph. In fact, Lord Drayson is apparently looking to soon beat his own record, tweeting to fans that on an additional run the car was ?very lively at 216 mph.?

While he may be celebrating victory, the claimed record could come under dispute. The Buckeye Bullet, an EV built by students at Ohio State University, actually achieved a 307.7 mph average during two runs at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah in August 2010 ? and was seen as capable of reaching 400 mph. But that effort was not officially sanctioned by the FIA, leaving GE?s Battery Box the certified record-holder for another three years.

To proponents, what matters most is the increasing focus in electric racing and battery propulsion, in general.

There?s clearly a lot more interest, for example, has nudged its ZEOD RC battery race car up to 186 mph, and Top EV Racing claims to have launched its battery dragster from 0 to 100 in a mind-boggling 0.8 seconds.

What could put battery racing square in the public eye is the new Formula E series set to launch in 2015. Not surprisingly, Lord Drayson is looking to participate when that program gets underway.

Sam Mendes Still Not Confirmed for Bond 24

Sam Mendes Still Not Confirmed For Bond 24

To be honest, I?m getting so fed up with Sam Mendes? on-again/off-again relationship with Bond 24 that at this point, I think I?d rather just see someone else direct. I mean, one week the guy is saying he?ll do the project, then the next week he?s saying he may not. It?s time to make a decision Sam, we won?t wait forever.

Despite what we heard last month, which was that Mendes would indeed direct, the director has now said that he?s still unsure and hasn?t made a final decision yet.

Speaking with?Hey U Guys?at the premiere of his stage adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Mendes said the following:

?In answer to the question you?re going to ask, I don?t know yet. I?m in discussion over the ?B? word and I won?t make any decision until ['Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'] is open. It?s taken a long time to get this open and this has been my focus.?

Initially, the director had no intention of returning to direct, stating that the thought of returning for another Bond film made him physically ill. And so, the search began for a new director and quite a few appealing candidates were tossed around. But then Mendes said he?d return for not only Bond 24, but Bond 25 as well, and fans everywhere breathed a sigh of relief.

Now though, everything is uncertain again and we?re left wondering who will direct. While I?m not exactly opposed to Mendes coming back, like I said, at this point I think I?d rather them just go with someone else. Sure,?Skyfall?was the most successful Bond film of all time but I?m sure that someone like Christopher Nolan or Nicolas Winding Refn could do just as good a job with?Bond 24, don?t you think?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Find a Different Route to Work and Exercise Your Brain

When you need to trick your brain into getting a bit more creative, artificial limits can help. One method anyone can try is forcing yourself to find a new route to work.

As productivity blog Lifehack points out, picking a different way to get to work can get your brain to do things it's not accustomed to doing during your routine like problem solving or finding creative solutions. Not to mention the new stimuli you'll see on the way:

This may seem like a small thing, but by going out of your way to find new ways to get to work you are changing your input naturally. You will see new things, think about new things and make new connections.

If you're looking for an easy limitation to try to work around, try finding a more efficient route that eliminates left turns and get the bonus of potentially saving gas and time while you're at it. Check out the source link for more ways to get your brain thinking more creatively.

Drummer Alan Myers, Devo's 'human metronome' from 1976 to 1986 ...

Alan Myers of Devo

Alan Myers, the third and most well-known of Devo?s drummers, the so-called ?human metronome? who anchored the classic albums Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, Duty Now for the Future, Freedom of Choice and more, died this week, according to Ralph Carney, a jazz musician and friend of Myers?, and current Devo drummer Josh Freese.

Carney, a onetime bandmate of Myers? and uncle of The Black Keys? drummer Patrick Carney, tonight posted on Facebook earlier tonight: ?i just got some bad news. Alan Myers passed yesterday from cancer. he was Devo?s best drummer and one of the first people to teach me about jazz. i cry???.?

UPDATE: Devo?s Gerald Casale has paid tribute to his former bandmate, tweeting:

?

Myers joined Devo in 1976, replacing Jim Mothersbaugh, and played with the band through its formative years in the mid-to-late ?70s and then into the group?s commercial peak with the hit single ?Whip It? and beyond. He left the band in 1986, having last appeared on Devo?s album Shout, after reportedly feeling a lack of creative fulfillment.? He was replaced by Sparks? David Kendrick, but continued to play music in Los Angeles with a variety of ensembles.

Freese has credited Myers? playing on 1980?s Freedom of Choice as his own inspiration to drum.

In 2010, he told Spin magazine:

?It was the first album I got, when I was eight years old. I sat in my basement and played along to it all the time, so it was crazy when we did that tour last year where we played it top to bottom. It?s fun in the way that it?s very metronomic and the patterns are very deliberate and kind of nursery rhyme. A lot of people think that it?s a drum machine on ?Whip It.? But that?s Alan Myers.?

?

Tonight, Freese tweeted:

?

Paula Deen: Fans serve up heaping helpings of support

The Food Network has dropped Paula Deen from her roster for admitting to making racial comments. Is this the end for the Southern food star? Fans hash it out on social media networks.

Having been fired from the Food Network, Paul Deen has officially entered the next chapter of her cooking career. Whether it will continue to sizzle or now be shelved in the back of the food-celebrity pantry remains to be seen.

But there's no question that Ms. Deen's fans are now serving heaping helpings of outrage.

"The majority of the people that we all love in the world of entertainment are racist and have other view points that we would cringe and rage over. I don't care if [Paula Deen] is or isn't racist. I just want to watch her make a pie. This is foodnetwork. Not lets play politically correct network," writes April Campbell on the Food Network's Facebook page under a photo of "30-minute pasta salad." More than 400 people showed support by "liking" Ms. Campbell's comment.

Just a few short years ago, Ms. Deen was the Grand Marshal of the 122nd?Rose Bowl parade in Pasedena, Calif. Today the queen of Southern cooking and author of 14 cookbooks has been kicked out of the food court and into the center of swirling racial controversy.

In case you missed the news, The Christian Science Monitor (among others) reported earlier this week that the now former Food Network star and Savannah, Ga., restaurateur said in a May deposition related to a harassment lawsuit, that ?of course? she had used the "n-word," but not in a ?mean way.?

While the Food Network. and now Smithfield Foods, has dropped any and all affiliation with Deen, the passionate response to her confession and follow-up apology video continues to heat up social media sites.

This is the second time during the past year that Deen has been the center of controversy.

The first came with the public announcement in 2012 that she had been diagnosed with diabetes and was changing course in what and how much she ate, embracing low-cal recipes and advocating moderation in portion sizes. In a January 2013 issue of People magazine Deen was profiled along with her husband focusing on the family's collective weight loss and efforts to stay fit.

Deen's cuisine has never aimed much above low-brow. Her original restaurant in Savannah, Ga., was loved for its buffet of Southern fare: sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, meatloaf, fried chicken, greens, hoecakes, and deep-fried Twinkies.

But following her public announcement of her diagnosis, which she had kept private for several years, Deen also became a spokeswoman for Novo Nordisk's diabetes drug Victoza. Her affiliation drew criticism from those who viewed it as a profitmaking venture on a diet-related condition that she was helping to perpetuate through her calorie-laden recipes.

These earnest efforts toward reforming a diet, and the attempts to rectify the most recent PR disaster, have become a bulls-eye target in the blogosphere, drawing reactions from fans and Deen-haters alike.

A "We support Paula Deen" Facebook page already has nearly 307,000 "likes."?

One website in particular that has been hit with a wave of opinions following the racial controversy is The Food Channel ? not to be confused with the Food Network. The Food Channel began in the 1980s as a newsletter and has expanded to a website with cooking videos. The similarity in names has managed to attract the torch burning, pitchfork waving crowd to The Food Channel's website. But surprisingly it is not Deen they are after, it's the Food Network itself for their quick decision to pull the plug on Deen's Food Network show.

The Food Channel became so quickly flooded with responses to the Deen debacle that they posted a response on their website titled, "For Those Who Love Paula Deen":?

"Attention all those who love Paula Deen. We?ve been getting your emails. Your phone calls. We?re pretty sure the good old fashioned mail will soon follow. We get that you are mad about her contract not being renewed. The problem is, you are calling and writing the wrong people.... We are not owned by Scripps. We are independently owned.... So, the best we can do is point you to the Scripps Television Network snail mail address....

Roland Emmerich Talks White House Down

June 25, 2013 | 6:00 a.m.

Roland Emmerich?s face wore an easy expression of carefree calm as he strolled onto the patio of his Hollywood Hills home. The German director had just come from a morning screening of his new action movie ?White House Down,? which blasts into theaters Friday. He?d been carefully listening to the final mix of the thundering soundtrack ? a symphony of explosions, gunfire and shattering glass ? and for the most part, he was happy, though a few remaining imperfections nagged at the corners of his smile.

?Everybody who makes movies, they say you can never, ever finish a movie, you can only abandon it, no matter how much time you have,? Emmerich said.

When Leonardo da Vinci stated, ?Art is never finished, only abandoned,? he wasn?t necessarily referring to big-budget summer popcorn movies, and even the kindest critics might be hard-pressed to describe Emmerich?s films as works of art. Of the nine studio movies he previously directed, only two, ?Independence Day? and ?The Patriot,? have ratings above 50% fresh on the website Rotten Tomatoes.

But in a career spanning three decades, Emmerich, 57, has proved himself a reliable hitmaker for the studios ? combined, his movies have earned more than $1 billion in North America alone.

Director Roland Emmerich appears on the set of Columbia Pictures' "White House Down," (MCT)

Director Roland Emmerich appears on the set of Columbia Pictures? ?White House Down,? (MCT)

?White House Down? is comfortably poised to add to Emmerich?s box office tally. The movie, written by James Vanderbilt, sees Channing Tatum?s aspiring Secret Service agent John Cale tasked with guarding the life of the president (Jamie Foxx) after he?s targeted in a terrorist plot. Cale also must protect his precocious preteen daughter Emily (Joey King), who is touring 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. with her dad when chaos breaks out.

?It?s a straight action movie with slight political undertones done in the way I like to do movies so they don?t take themselves too seriously,? Emmerich said of his latest project. ?Sometimes I have a real problem with that. There was a time in the ?70s and ?80s mainly where people made fun movies which were not taking themselves too seriously. I don?t know what happened.?

In an industry with so much bluster and posturing, Emmerich seems to operate with a refreshing degree of candor and self-awareness. When he talks about the defining characteristics of his movies, he says that most of the time, there?s a ?strong basic idea.? He?s not attempting to make the sort of weighty, cerebral blockbusters pioneered by Christopher Nolan, or the coolly sleek variety so strongly associated with Michael Bay. He wants his movies to have humor and heart.

?There are those people who make mainstream commercial films in order to further their career so that they can one day get to make the movie they?ve always dreamed of making,? said Dean Devlin, Emmerich?s writing and producing partner on such projects as ?Stargate? and ?Independence Day.? ?And then there?s those people who really, really love mainstream movies, and Roland?s one of those people. He approaches these films with the same amount of love and passion as Scorsese does when he does an art picture.?

Even as a film student in Munich in the late ?70s, Emmerich realized that his sensibilities ran in a more commercial direction than those of his peers. They aspired to become the next Rainer Werner Fassbinder or Wim Wenders, while Emmerich was interested in following in the creative footsteps of George Lucas or Steven Spielberg.

By the time he arrived in Los Angeles at age 34, Emmerich had made four independent films in Germany, learning to work quickly and economically, a skill set he believes sets him apart.

?You have to see it, these movies are a job, and I?m constantly trying to be as professional as possible,? Emmerich said. ?That?s why they like me at the studios. When I came to Los Angeles, I just saw how they?re making movies here, and it?s a waste of money; 20% to 30% is waste ? egos, laziness, not being really truly professional, lack of craftsmanship. All these kinds of things, they add up.?

?White House Down? finds Emmerich returning to his comfort zone after 2011?s period costume drama ?Anonymous,? which pondered the mystery of who really wrote Shakespeare?s plays. Sony chief Amy Pascal tipped Emmerich to the screenplay, and although he had some initial reservations about the premise ? ?I said, ?Oh, my God, not the White House again?? ? he found himself hooked by the premise.

The $150-million film shot on location in Montreal last year, with the production partially shooting six-day weeks to accommodate Tatum?s schedule ? the busy actor completed ?White House Down? and immediately began shooting another film, the drama ?Foxcatcher? for director Bennett Miller.

As with Emmerich?s earlier hits ?2012? and ?The Day After Tomorrow,? ?White House Down? follows the formula the filmmaker established with his 1996 alien invasion thriller ?Independence Day?: There?s the charming but gently flawed protagonist at the center of a diverse ensemble cast, the spectacular disaster set pieces laced with a winking humor, the requisite upbeat ending.

Exactly how ?White House Down? will fare in a crowded summer marketplace remains to be seen ? early tracking suggests the film should open to about $25 million against the Sandra Bullock-Melissa McCarthy buddy cop comedy ?The Heat? ? but Emmerich already is looking to the future projects that will occupy his time.

Next up is ?Independence Day 2,? which is set to arrive in theaters July 3, 2015, 19 years after the original opened to record-breaking box office and transformed Emmerich into a final cut filmmaker. Shooting is expected to begin early next year, and roughly half the cast is expected to return, though Will Smith will not be among them. (?He?s too big now,? Emmerich said. ?It would be a ?Will Smith? movie.?)

?There?s so much misery out in our world, it?s such a harsh world,? Emmerich said. ?You go to a movie, you want to feel good about it. Sometimes terrible things happen on screen, but at the end, you want to feel good about people.?

JetBlue begins Fly-Fi flight testing, on track for Q3 launch

JetBlue begins FlyFi flight testing, on track for Q3 launch

Adding satellite WiFi to an airplane isn't as simple as mounting an antenna up top and flipping the switch on a router -- even installing a cockpit printer requires FAA approval, so as you can expect, the Federal Aviation Administration won't check off on major modifications without some thorough testing. JetBlue's new Fly-Fi service is well on its way to getting a formal green light, though, and is expected to launch before Q3 is through. This week, the carrier is running through a variety of flight tests with one of its Airbus A320s, including maneuvering the plane with some pretty unique weight loads, such as the rear center of gravity positioning you can see demonstrated above. After that's complete, it's time to wait for FAA certification before moving onto performance testing, and if all goes well, passengers should expect to hook up to ViaSat-1 from 30,000 feet in mere months. Once Fly-Fi goes online, it'll be by far the fastest commercial in-flight WiFi option -- we really can't wait!

Brazil's Rousseff proposes political reform to quell protests

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff on Monday proposed a popular referendum to embark on a sweeping political reform in response to the country's largest public protests in 20 years.

Rousseff called for a public vote to eventually amend Brazil's constitution as she sought to seize the momentum in a national debate set off by two weeks of increasingly disruptive demonstrations.

The president also laid out an agenda to cut taxes on public transportation costs, accelerate investment in hospitals and crack down on political corruption - recurring concerns raised by Brazil's nameless, leaderless protest movement.

"The streets are telling us that the country wants quality public services, more effective measures to combat corruption ... and responsive political representation," Rousseff said in remarks to a meeting of governors and mayors.

While vowing to crack down on a violent minority that has looted stores and vandalized government buildings, Rousseff praised the democratic spirit of most protesters and framed her agenda as addressing their concerns.

Still, a sluggish economy has left Rousseff with little room to maneuver the federal budget and protesters are unlikely to see rapid improvements in their daily lives. A constitutional reform by referendum could take years as the government must arrange a public vote and compose a constitutional committee to debate the overhaul of Brazil's representative democracy.

Rousseff proposed an additional 50 billion reais ($22 billion) of investments to address the complaints about public transport that first set off the protests that have shaken markets and threatened her enduring popularity.

The mostly peaceful demonstrations peaked on Thursday, when about a million people took to the streets in cities across Brazil with occasional instances of violence and vandalism.

Recent days have been calmer but social media points to another round of protests focused around an international soccer match on Wednesday between Brazil and Uruguay in the city of Belo Horizonte.

The demands for better public services have raised concerns about looser government spending, which Rousseff sought to head off by introducing her agenda with a call for fiscal discipline.

The president reiterated her proposals to set aside future oil royalties for education and import doctors from abroad.

She may struggle to find new tax revenue for her agenda, however, as the economy struggles to gain steam, inflation is eating away at purchasing power, and rising interest rates are making consumer credit more costly. Two straight years of what many economists decry as fiscal slippage under Rousseff have made it even tougher to increase spending.

Russian cosmonauts finish up long out for a spacewalk

NASA via AP

In this frame grab from video provided by NASA, two Russian flight engineers perform maintenance on the International Space Station on Monday.

By Miriam Kramer

Two cosmonauts took a spacewalk outside the International Space Station on Monday to prepare the orbiting outpost for the arrival of a new Russian laboratory later this year.

Clad in bulky Orlan spacesuits, cosmonauts Fyodor Yurchikhin and Alexander Misurkin?spent more than six hours outside the space station?to test automated docking system cables and install equipment in preparation for the arrival of the new Russian Multipurpose Laboratory, a science module slated to launch to the orbiting laboratory by the end of 2013. The spacewalk began at 9:32 a.m. ET.

Yurchikhin and Misurkin successfully tested the docking system cables that will be used to help the new Multipurpose Laboratory module dock itself at the station when it arrives. The spacewalkers also installed cable clamps to hold the cables that will route power and data from the U.S. segment of the space station to the new laboratory module. [See Photos of the Russian Spacewalk]

It wasn't all work and no play for the hard-working cosmonauts.

"Can you make the sun not shine so bright?" one of the spacewalkers joked during the orbital work. "It's shining right in my eyes."

Yurchikhin and Misurkin are part of the space station's six-person?Expedition 36 crew. Their crewmates ? fellow cosmonaut Pavel Vinogradov, NASA's Chris Cassidy and Karen Nyberg, and European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano ? remained inside the International Space Station during the spacewalk.

Misurkin and Yurchikhin were lighthearted during the six-hour, 34-minute excursion. They joked with Russian Mission Control about being hungry, paused occasionally for a photo and commented on the?beauty of the Earth from space.

"I guess we're flying over South America," one of the spacewalkers said at one point. "Gorgeous."

Aside from the new module preparation work, the cosmonauts also replaced a fluid control valve panel on the Zarya module, installed a new science experiment on the exterior of the orbiting laboratory, and retrieved two older experiments.

They installed tethers between handholds to be used by cosmonauts and astronauts on future spacewalks; however, they weren't able to mount all of them in time. The remaining tethers will be installed during a future spacewalk, NASA officials said.

Monday's spacewalk marked the sixth excursion for Yurchikhin, a veteran cosmonaut making his fourth spaceflight. It was the first for Misurkin. Before this spacewalk, Yurchikhin had logged 31 hours and 52 minutes of spacewalking time.

Six more spacewalks are planned for this year, four Russian and two American. The U.S. spacewalks are scheduled to take place on July 2 and 9.

Monday's excursion marked the 169th spacewalk for maintenance and assembly performed on the $100 billion orbiting laboratory. The?International Space Station?was built by 15 countries represented by five space agencies, and construction began in 1998. It has been continuously staffed by rotating crews of astronauts since 2000.

Square roots? Scientists say plants are good at math

LONDON (Reuters) - Plants do complex arithmetic calculations to make sure they have enough food to get them through the night, new research published in journal eLife shows.

Scientists at Britain's John Innes Centre said plants adjust their rate of starch consumption to prevent starvation during the night when they are unable to feed themselves with energy from the sun.

They can even compensate for an unexpected early night.

"This is the first concrete example in a fundamental biological process of such a sophisticated arithmetic calculation," mathematical modeler Martin Howard of John Innes Centre (JIC) said.

During the night, mechanisms inside the leaf measure the size of the starch store and estimate the length of time until dawn. Information about time comes from an internal clock, similar to the human body clock.

"The capacity to perform arithmetic calculation is vital for plant growth and productivity," JIC metabolic biologist Alison Smith said.

"Understanding how plants continue to grow in the dark could help unlock new ways to boost crop yield."

Everything you want to know about Android's new Navigation Drawer

Navigation Drawer

Google's Android developers have delivered a great video all about the new Navigation Drawer

We've talked before about how the Android team is serious about design. They want Android, and the great apps that developers create, to not only work well, but to look good. We noticed this at Google I/O in May, that there was a new (and long-awaited) focus on building applications that look like the belong. Apps with a consistent and elegant user interface, versus the jumble of different design styles and choices of the past.

It's a big undertaking. You have to account for different screen sizes, devices with or without the recommended button layout, and most of all you need to find a fluid look and feel that works well for the end user. Nobody likes an app that is difficult to use. Google tried to get everyone on-board with the action bar method, and it's a great solution for some things. But sometimes, you need to get dirty and have a list of user choices and options. That's where the new Navigation Drawer concept comes into play.

Grab your phone. Open the YouTube app or Google Play Books app. Swipe your finger to the right on the main screen (view). That's the new Navigation Drawer at work. Google Play Books could probably get away with just an action bar and overflow area (those three dots in the upper right) but the YouTube app has plenty of choices and options that would otherwise be buried three levels deep. The Navigation Drawer seems like a perfect way to present them all to the users -- you and me.

A lot of thought went into this, and luckily the Android developers are willing to share their thoughts about it all. Join Roman Nurik, Jens Nagel and Rich Fulcher after the break for 47 minutes of great information about why, where and when you would want to use the Navigation Drawer. Even if you're never going to design an Android app, it's a great watch and really drives the idea home.

Sugar solution makes tissues see-through

June 23, 2013 ? Japanese researchers have developed a new sugar and water-based solution that turns tissues transparent in just three days, without disrupting the shape and chemical nature of the samples. Combined with fluorescence microscopy, this technique enabled them to obtain detailed images of a mouse brain at an unprecedented resolution.

The team from the RIKEN Center for Developmental biology reports their finding today in Nature Neuroscience.

Over the past few years, teams in the USA and Japan have reported a number of techniques to make biological samples transparent, that have enabled researchers to look deep down into biological structures like the brain.

"However, these clearing techniques have limitations because they induce chemical and morphological damage to the sample and require time-consuming procedures," explains Dr. Takeshi Imai, who led the study.

SeeDB, an aqueous fructose solution that Dr. Imai developed with colleagues Drs. Meng-Tsen Ke and Satoshi Fujimoto, overcomes these limitations.

Using SeeDB, the researchers were able to make mouse embryos and brains transparent in just three days, without damaging the fine structures of the samples, or the fluorescent dyes they had injected in them. They could then visualize the neuronal circuitry inside a mouse brain, at the whole-brain scale, under a customized fluorescence microscope without making mechanical sections through the brain.

They describe the detailed wiring patterns of commissural fibers connecting the right and left hemispheres of the cerebral cortex, in three dimensions, for the first time.

Dr. Imai and colleagues report that they were also able to visualize in three dimensions the wiring of mitral cells in the olfactory bulb, which is involved the detection of smells, at single-fiber resolution.

"Because SeeDB is inexpensive, quick, easy and safe to use, and requires no special equipment, it will prove useful for a broad range of studies, including the study of neuronal circuits in human samples," explain the authors.

Afghanistan seeks explanation for Taliban office

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Afghanistan's government said Sunday it is still waiting for a full explanation of how the Taliban were allowed to open an office in Qatar that was akin to an embassy, flying the militant group's flag and using its formal name from the years it ruled the country.

But Foreign Ministry spokesman Janan Mosazai said the Afghan government remains willing to send a peace delegation to Doha to negotiate with the Taliban once it has its explanation, as well as assurances that the office will be nothing more than a place for talks.

"The Afghan government remains fully committed to pursue a process of peace negotiations with the armed opposition, including the Taliban, but within the confines of the conditions and the principles and the assurances that we have established," Mosazai told reporters in Kabul.

The diplomatic incident served as a reminder of just how difficult a task lies ahead in getting all sides to the negotiating table after nearly 12 years of war.

The Taliban's office opened Tuesday in a ceremony broadcast on live television, accompanied by a simultaneous announcement that U.S. officials would begin formal talks with Taliban representatives, which eventually would be joined by the Afghan government.

That raised hopes that the long-stalled peace process could finally begin.

But the Taliban's use of its old flag and a sign bearing the name of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, which the movement used during its five-year rule that ended in 2001 with the U.S.-led invasion, provoked outrage across party lines in Afghanistan.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai reacted sharply, suspending negotiations with the U.S. over what presence international forces may keep in Afghanistan after 2014 and demanded the offending sign and flag be removed.

The Taliban has since complied after the Qatar government intervened. Both the U.S. and the Qataris said the Taliban had agreed on the pre-approved name but violated the pact at the ribbon cutting ceremony.

In an e-mailed statement Sunday, however, Taliban spokesman Muhammad Naeem said the use of the flag and name was "done with the agreement of the Qatari government."

"The statement which states that by using the name and raising the flag, the Islamic Emirate somehow violated an agreement... is completely false," Naeem said in an English-language statement.

The Qatari government had no immediate response.

At the Taliban office in Doha, security was boosted Sunday but there were no apparent signs of meetings or other diplomatic activity. There was no flag visible from the street.

On Saturday, Taliban spokesman Shaheen Suhail suggested the Taliban was willing to move ahead with peace talks, despite "much anger" among some members over the removal of the name and the lowering of the Taliban's white flag emblazoned with a Quranic verse in black.

Mosazai said, however, that Afghanistan is still waiting for a full explanation from Washington and guarantees the Taliban will not attempt to revert to its formal name again.

"We need an explanation about how this happened, why this happened, who made this happen ? and then for the office and its terms of reference to be brought back into full compliance with the written assurances given to the Afghan government prior to the establishment of the office," he said.

He also suggested that after "initial contacts" between the Taliban and the United States, the Afghan government expects to lead official peace talks and would push to move them to Afghanistan.

"Official negotiations in the context of the peace process will have to be, and can only take place, between the (Afghan) High Peace Council on the one hand and the authorized representatives of the Taliban on the other," he said. "Our preference would be for those negotiations to take place inside Afghanistan after the initial stage."

Doctors make progress toward 'artificial pancreas'

Doctors are reporting a major step toward an "artificial pancreas," a device that would constantly monitor blood sugar in people with diabetes and automatically supply insulin as needed.

A key component of such a system ? an insulin pump programmed to shut down if blood-sugar dips too low while people are sleeping ? worked as intended in a three-month study of 247 patients.

This "smart pump," made by Minneapolis-based Medtronic Inc., is already sold in Europe, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is reviewing it now. Whether it also can be programmed to mimic a real pancreas and constantly adjust insulin based on continuous readings from a blood-sugar monitor requires more testing, but doctors say the new study suggests that's a realistic goal.

"This is the first step in the development of the artificial pancreas," said Dr. Richard Bergenstal, diabetes chief at Park Nicollet, a large clinic in St. Louis Park, Minn. "Before we said it's a dream. We have the first part of it now and I really think it will be developed."

He led the company-sponsored study and gave results Saturday at an American Diabetes Association conference in Chicago. They also were published online by the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study involved people with Type 1 diabetes, the kind usually diagnosed during childhood. About 5 percent of the 26 million Americans with diabetes have this type. Their bodies don't make insulin, a hormone needed to turn food into energy. That causes high blood-sugar levels and raises the risk for heart disease and many other health problems.

Some people with the more common Type 2 diabetes, the kind linked to obesity, also need insulin and might benefit from a device like an artificial pancreas, too. For now, though, it's aimed at people with Type 1 diabetes who must inject insulin several times a day or get it through a pump with a narrow tube that goes under the skin. The pump is about the size of a cellphone and can be worn on a belt or kept in a pocket.

The pumps give a steady amount of insulin, and patients must monitor their sugar levels and give themselves more insulin at meals or whenever needed to keep blood sugar from getting too high.

A big danger is having too much insulin in the body overnight, when blood-sugar levels naturally fall. People can go into comas, suffer seizures and even die. Parents of children with diabetes often worry so much about this that they sneak into their bedrooms at night to check their child's blood-sugar monitor.

In the study, all patients had sensors that continuously monitored their blood sugar. Half of them had ordinary insulin pumps and the others had pumps programmed to stop supplying insulin for two hours when blood-sugar fell to a certain threshold.

Over three months, low-sugar episodes were reduced by about one-third in people using the pump with the shut-off feature. Importantly, these people had no cases of severely low blood sugar ? the most dangerous kind that require medical aid or help from another person. There were four cases in the group using the standard pump.

"As a first step, I think we should all be very excited that it works," an independent expert, Dr. Irl Hirsch of the University of Washington in Seattle, said of the programmable pump.

The next step is to test having it turn off sooner, before sugar falls so much, and to have it automatically supply insulin to prevent high blood sugar, too.

Dr. Anne Peters, a diabetes specialist at the University of Southern California, said the study "represents a major step forward" for an artificial pancreas.

One participant, Spears Mallis, 34, a manager for a cancer center in Gainesville, Ga., wishes these devices were available now. He typically gets low-sugar about 8 to 10 times a week, at least once a week while he's asleep.

"I would set an alarm in the middle of the night just to be sure I was OK. That will cause you to not get a good night of rest," he said.

His "smart pump" stopped giving insulin several times during the study when his sugar fell low, and he wasn't always aware of it. That's a well-known problem for people with Type 1 diabetes ? over time, "you become less and less sensitive to feeling the low blood sugars" and don't recognize symptoms in time to drink juice or do something else to raise sugar a bit, he said.

Besides Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson and several other research groups are working on artificial pancreas devices.

Europe tests reusable spaceship

PARIS | Fri Jun 21, 2013 12:20pm EDT

PARIS (Reuters) - The European Space Agency is preparing to launch an experimental reusable spaceship next summer following a successful atmospheric test flight this week, officials said at the Paris Airshow.

A mock-up built by Thales Alenia Space was dropped from a helicopter flying 1.9 miles above the Mediterranean near Sardinia on Wednesday to check its handling and parachute system, company officials said.

The 14.4 foot long (4.4 meter) craft, known as "IXV" as it is an intermediate experimental vehicle, splashed down in the ocean and was retrieved by an awaiting ship.

The test flight clears IXV for a follow-on demonstration run beyond the Earth's atmosphere in August next year. That program, in turn, paves the way for an orbital prototype dubbed "Pride", slated to launch in 2018.

The aim is to help Europe develop an autonomous atmospheric re-entry system that could be used on vehicles flying experiments in space, Roberto Provera, director of space transportation programs for Thales Alenia Space, told Reuters.

"It's the first time in Europe that we've tried something like this," Provera said, adding that it could eventually be used to carry people.

The vehicles are similar to but smaller than the U.S. military's X-37B Orbital Test Vehicles, built by Boeing. Like NASA's now-retired space shuttles, they have "lifting body" designs shaped to produce lift without airplane-like wings.

For its next test, Europe will launch another IXV vehicle on a Vega rocket from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana.

Once at an altitude of about 199 miles, the IXV will separate from the rocket and climb to about 267 miles before slamming back into the atmosphere at a speed of about 4.7 miles per second and parachuting into the Pacific Ocean.

Several U.S. firms are also developing reusable spaceships. Designs include traditional capsules, as well as "lifting body" vehicles.

SPACE STATION

Privately owned Sierra Nevada Corp., for example, is testing a vehicle called Dream Chaser that has NASA backing.

The U.S. space agency, which retired its space shuttles in 2011, is seeking commercial options to fly astronauts to the International Space Station, a permanently staffed research outpost that flies about 250 miles above Earth.

Virgin Galactic, a U.S. offshoot of billionaire Richard Branson's London-based Virgin Group, is testing a suborbital passenger vehicle called SpaceShipTwo, expected to start flying next year.

The U.S. military has two experimental unmanned reusable spaceships developed under its X-37B program. One is in orbit.

President Vladimir Putin told astronauts in orbit in April that Russia would send up the first manned flights from its own soil in 2018, using a new launch pad he said would help the once-pioneering space power explore deep space and the moon.

Thales Alenia said it has not yet finalized a price for Pride with the European Space Agency, but expects it will cost about the same as the IXV program, or roughly 200 million Euros ($264 million).

Thales Alenia Space is a joint venture owned 67 percent by France's Thales and 33 percent by Italy's Finmeccanica.
