Review: Fassbender lays himself bare in 'Shame' (AP)

Despite the ado about its NC-17 rating, "Shame" is the least-sexy movie about sex you will ever see.

Michael Fassbender lays himself bare, literally and metaphorically, as a sex addict prowling an increasingly dark and dangerous New York City; one of the first shots is of his character, Brandon, walking naked through his chicly sparse bachelor pad in the unforgiving morning light. But there's nothing titillating about the often graphic interludes in which Brandon engages; they grow more desperate, animalistic and unsatisfying ? for everyone involved ? as the film spirals toward its overwhelming conclusion.

Fassbender reunites with Steve McQueen, the British artist-turned-filmmaker who directed him in his breakthrough role, 2008's "Hunger," in which he starred as Irish hunger striker Bobby Sands. The two seem to push each other to their extremes in a collaboration that's as challenging as it is creatively liberating. Fassbender's performance here is riveting, haunting. He immerses himself and makes you feel as if you're truly watching a man hell-bent on exorcising his demons through compulsive self-destruction.

On the exterior, though, Brandon is stylish, polished and confident; McQueen lures us in and builds tension through impressively extended tracking shots and long static shots that linger on Fassbender's chiseled facial features, his hard, blue eyes and his lean, muscular frame. But Brandon's impulses betray him. He'll hold the glance of a pretty, married woman on the subway for far too long, and expensive escorts slip in and out of his high-rise apartment day and night. Later, his overly garrulous boss (James Badge Dale) at his nondescript corporate job will inform him that his computer is filthy with porn, and that the techs had to scrub it clean.

He finds his routine disrupted with the unannounced arrival of his younger sister, Sissy (Carey Mulligan), a wayward lounge singer just in from Los Angeles with nowhere else to go. The two have an unspecified history of family damage which makes it impossible for either of them to develop a loving, stable romance. (Some viewers have suggested that they shared an incestuous relationship as children; I don't see it and McQueen wisely leaves it open for interpretation.) Mulligan is also quite powerful here in a vast departure from the more reserved roles we've seen her in before ("An Education," "Never Let Me Go"). There's always something that's just a little off in the way Brandon and Sissy regard each other, even in quiet moments on the couch, and that volatility crackles.

Brandon makes a feeble stab at normalcy by dumping his prodigious porn collection and asking out a beautiful, intelligent co-worker (Nicole Baharie). McQueen stages their dinner date in one, long take, pushing in ever so gradually as they awkwardly get to know each other. It's a rare moment of pure intimacy, and it'll make you hold your breath wondering how long it can last.

But as is true of many addicts, whether they're hooked on alcohol, pills or any other substance, Brandon must hit bottom before he can begin to ponder the possibility of redemption. His descent has its shocking moments but it ultimately feels tedious and self-indulgent, which turns "Shame" into a cross between "American Psycho" and "Eyes Wide Shut." The cool precision of the film's earlier scenes gives way to melodrama and leaves you feeling pummeled. Perhaps that was the point, but it's off-putting.

Fassbender always finds subtlety within the character regardless of the situation, though. And between this, "A Dangerous Method" and "Jane Eyre," he's proven in one year alone that he can do pretty much anything, and do it with startling masculine grace.

"Shame," a Fox Searchlight release, is rated NC-17 for some explicit sexual content. Running time: 99 minutes. Three stars out of four.

UnitedHealth sees 2012 Medicare, Medicaid gains (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? UnitedHealth Group Inc, the largest U.S. health insurer, forecast an increase in membership next year as gains in its Medicare and Medicaid plans more than offset declines in some plans serving employers and individuals.

UnitedHealth, already one of the largest providers of Medicare plans for the elderly, on Tuesday projected that it would add up to 300,000 Medicare Advantage members next year.

In sum, it projected it would add 790,000 to 1.15 million members in 2012, pushing its total well above 35 million.

The company, whose shares were up 2.4 percent in midday trading, issued the projections at its annual investor day in New York. It talked up prospects of both its UnitedHealthcare benefit plans and its Optum healthcare services businesses.

UnitedHealth also stood by its long-term goal of 13 percent to 16 percent annual growth in earnings per share.

A health insurance industry bellwether due to its size and the diversity of its plans, UnitedHealth on Monday forecast 2012 profit that only barely met Wall Street's target. But its shares rose as analysts called the forecast conservative and said it allayed fears of a lower outlook.

Medicare is one of the most enticing areas for health insurance companies as the postwar baby boom generation moves into retirement, swelling the ranks of privately run Medicare Advantage plans.

Just last week, UnitedHealth struck a deal to buy privately held Medicare specialist XLHealth Corp, which will further boost the company's Medicare Advantage membership beyond the projections issued on Tuesday. UnitedHealth projects 2.5 million Medicare Advantage members next year.

The company also projected it would add 250,000 to 325,000 members to its Medicaid plans for low-income Americans in 2012, swelling its total to about 3.8 million.

UnitedHealth forecast declines of up to 200,000 members for its commercial plans for employers and individuals that assume full insurance risk.

For employer-based plans in which UnitedHealth provides only administrative services, which are less lucrative, the company projected enrollment gains of as much as 500,000.

For the Optum businesses, which include a wide array of services such as electronic health records and pharmacy benefits, UnitedHealth projected profit of $1.3 billion to $1.4 billion next year, or an increase of 4 percent to 12 percent.

UnitedHealth is in the process of significantly expanding its OptumRx prescription benefit business by bringing in house business it previously outsourced to Medco Health Solutions Inc.

Optum Chief Executive Larry Renfro said the division's earnings will be dragged down by $115 million in investments in the pharmacy business next year. But he said the division is gearing up to be a competitor to pharmacy benefit managers Medco, Express Scripts Inc and CVS Caremark Corp.

"We have already begun to hear about our increasing competitiveness to the big three," Renfro said.

Health insurers have posted better-than-expected results throughout 2011, due largely to low medical claim costs as Americans delay doctor visits and medical procedures in the weak economy. But many companies have said they expect use of healthcare services to pick up.

UnitedHealth shares were up $1.08 to $46.11 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Which program created the most social media buzz this past week? As we've seen in charts past, social television participants tend to gravitate toward singular, news-making broadcasts. Before, it was awards shows -- this week, Trendrr's social TV chart gets political. CNN's Republican National Security debate last Tuesday spawned educated chatter throughout the social air waves. Also, The X Factor climbed up one spot to number-one in in the broadcast category, while the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade ran the middle-road at number six. Germany, France examine radical push for eurozone integration (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Germany and France are exploring radical methods of securing deeper and more rapid fiscal integration among euro zone countries, aware that getting broad backing for the necessary treaty changes may not be possible, officials say.

Germany's original plan was to try to secure agreement among all 27 EU countries for a limited treaty change by the end of 2012, making it possible to impose much tighter budget controls over the 17 euro zone countries -- a way of shoring up the region's defenses against the debt crisis.

But in meetings with EU leaders in recent weeks, it has become clear to both German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy that it may not be possible to get all 27 countries on board, EU sources say.

Even if that were possible, it could take a year or more to secure the changes while market attacks on Italy, Spain and now France suggest bold measures are needed within weeks.

As a result, senior French and German civil servants have been exploring other ways of achieving the goal, one being an agreement among just the euro zone countries.

"The goal is for the member states of the common currency to create their own Stability Union and to concentrate on that," German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told ARD television on Sunday.

Another option being explored is a separate agreement outside the EU treaty that could involve a core of around 8-10 euro zone countries, officials say.

An even more pressing decision faces euro zone finance ministers when they meet on Tuesday.

Detailed operational rules for the euro zone's bailout fund, the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), are ready for approval, documents obtained by Reuters showed.

The approval of the rules will clear the way for the 440 billion euro facility to attract cash from private and public investors to its co-investment funds in coming weeks, which, depending on interest, could multiply the EFSF's resources.

With Germany rigidly opposed to the idea of the ECB providing liquidity to the EFSF or acting as a lender of last resort, the euro zone needs a way of quickly calming markets, where yields on Spanish, Italian and French government benchmark bonds have all been pushed to euro lifetime highs.

Policymakers hope progress toward tougher fiscal rules will also assuage investors. Schaeuble said a Stability Union could be a decisive step to winning more confidence from the markets.

"That means that every euro zone member has to do its homework on its budget discipline. We want to ensure that through treaty changes," he said.

RADICAL OVERHAUL

Reuters exclusively reported on November 9 that French and German officials were discussing plans for a radical overhaul of the European Union to establish a more fiscally integrated and possibly smaller euro zone.

"The Germans have made up their minds. They want treaty change and they are doing everything they can to push for it as rapidly as possible," one senior EU official involved in the negotiations told Reuters. "Senior German officials are on the phone at all hours of the day to every European capital."

While Germany and France are convinced that moving toward fiscal union - which could pave the way for jointly issued euro zone bonds and may provide more leeway for the European Central Bank to act forcefully - is the only way to get on top of the debt crisis, some other euro zone countries are unable or unwilling to move so rapidly toward that goal.

Not only Greece, Ireland and Portugal, which are receiving EU/IMF aid, but also Italy and Spain and some east European countries such as Slovakia, would either find it difficult under current economic conditions to meet the budget constraints Germany wants, or simply do not agree with the aim.

Consequently, the French and German negotiators are exploring at least two models for more rapid integration among a limited number of euro zone countries, with the possibility of folding that agreement into the EU treaty at a later stage.

TWO MODELS

One is based on the Pruem Convention of 2005, also known as Schengen III, a treaty signed among 7 countries outside the EU treaty but which was open to any member state to join and was later acceded to by 5 more EU states plus Norway.

Another option would be to have a purely Franco-German mini-agreement along the lines of the Elysee treaty of 1963 that other euro zone countries could also sign up to, officials say.

"The options are being actively discussed as we speak and things are moving very, very quickly," a European Commission official briefed on the discussions told Reuters.

One source said the aim was to have the outline of an agreement set out before December 9, when EU leaders will meet for their final summit of the year in Brussels.

Sarkozy, who has made two speeches in the past two weeks highlighting the need for more rapid fiscal integration in the euro zone, and has acknowledged that it may be inevitable that a 'two-speed Europe' emerges, is due to make another keynote address on December 1 which could provide a platform for laying out in more detail the ideas that he and Merkel are developing.

A senior German government official denied there were any secret Franco-German negotiations, but emphasized that both countries saw the need for treaty change as pressing and were exploring how to achieve that in the best way possible.

"Germany and France are continuing to focus on proposals for a limited treaty change that can be presented at the EU summit in December," the official said, emphasizing that there was a need to act quickly to get changes in place.

The ECB has bought the bonds of euro zone strugglers in intermittent fashion when they have reached crisis point. Economists say it has to act much more radically to turn the market tide but the central bank, and Germany, has opposed any such move. Commitments to binding fiscal rules by euro zone governments may be the cover it needs to change tack.

"If this bond run is not stopped it will really endanger the stability of the European and even the global financial system. Bold action by the ECB is definitely needed," Peter Bofinger, one of the five "wise men" who formally advise the German government on the economy, told Irish state broadcaster RTE.

Reuters reported a similar possibility on Friday, with euro zone officials saying that if much tighter fiscal integration could be achieved among euro zone states, it would give the ECB more room to maneuver and buy sovereign bonds.

While EU officials are clear about the determination of France and Germany to push for more rapid euro zone integration, some caution that the idea of doing so with fewer than 17 countries via a sideline agreement may be more about applying pressure on the remainder to act.

By threatening that some countries could be left behind if they don't sign up to deeper integration, it may be impossible for a country to say no, fearing that doing so could leave it even more exposed to market pressures.

"Some of this is just part of the posturing you hear -- it's pressure from Germany to go for treaty change as quickly as possible," the official involved in the negotiations said.

"To some extent you have to see these ideas as part of the bargaining chips that are being put on the table."

Germans arrest suspect in neo-Nazi murder ring (AP)

BERLIN ? German prosecutors say they have arrested a 36-year-old man suspected of helping a neo-Nazi terror ring carry out six suspected murders over the course of a decade.

Federal prosecutors said in a statement that police had arrested a man identified only as Ralf W. early Tuesday on suspicion of abetting six counts of murder and one of attempted murder, in connection with the slayings by the far-right National Socialist Union of several victims with Turkish and Greek roots.

Prosecutors suspect the man of being "closely connected to the three members of the NSU since the 1990s." He is further suspected of having helped organize money and weapons that helped the group to live undetected for years.

Two NSU members are now dead, a third is in custody.

Sitting the dorm while the group went to Tartarus, Derek fummed silently as he stared at the ceiling. "They don't think I can handle it or are they scared of what I could do?" he states aloud. Looking to the side as he felt his persona materialize in the shadows, Derek saw Lilim hover out and touch his cheek. "I know, I just hate waiting." Lilim, touching Derek's other cheek, knew that he felt left out and also knew why. The groups' personas told her that were unsure if they trusted him yet. 'I hate seeing him like this.' the persona thought as Derek's emotions ran through her. Running her hands up his arm as Derek fell to sleep, Lilim heard her cousin Succubus enter and said, "How is he?' "Still upset, but hanging in."

The other demon wondered what it was about this human that Lilim felt so strongly about him. 'True he's as as powerful as Minato, maybe even stronger than him.' Succubus thought as Lilim hovered over to her. "So, am I in trouble?" Lilim asked the bigger demon, Succubus shakes her head. "No, just wanted to see the person that has you acting like a worried girlfriend." Lilim glared at her cousin as she restrained a growl. Succubus held her hands up and backed up; "Calm down Lilim, I'm just curious is all." Sighing to herself as she touched Derek once more before turning to her cousin pointing the open flame like shadow. "Let's go, they should be back in a few minutes." Nodding Succubus followed Lilim in as the small demon entered.

Derek drifted through school the following day, stay to himself and quiet. When school ended for the day, he went to Paulownia Mall and spent his evening at Mandragora; listening the people sing their favorite songs and wondered why he was even here. 'No one sees what I feel on a daily basis.' he thought as he polished off the rest of soda. "Am I destined to be alone?" he asked himself aloud. Staring at table as the minutes ticked on Derek started to consider leaving the SEES. 'Should I or shouldn't I?'

Tipping Teacup Eliminates Tea Bags, Balls, and Other Infusers [Stuff We Like]

Tipping Teacup Eliminates Tea Bags, Balls, and Other Infusers The Tipping Teacup is designed to stick your tea leaves on one side and pour hot water over the leaves to steep. When the tea is finished steeping, roll the cup back to take the leaves out of the tea.

Many of us who are into tea prefer to use loose leaf tea instead of the stuff put into tea bags. This normally means you'd have to use a strainer, tea ball infuser, or a french press to keep the leaves out of the tea but those methods mean you have another item to wash each time after your cuppa. The Tipping Teacup eliminates this extra step.

At $20 it's not the most frugal tea cup in the world, but if you usually drink tea solo it works great and is about the same price as a tea cup and a strainer or ball infuser.
