Images capture split personality of dense suspensions

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) ? Stir lots of small particles into water, and the resulting thick mixture appears highly viscous. When this dense suspension slips through a nozzle and forms a droplet, however, its behavior momentarily reveals a decidedly non-viscous side. University of Chicago physicists recorded this surprising behavior in laboratory experiments using high-speed photography, which can capture action taking place in one hundred-thousandths of a second or less.

UChicago graduate student Marc Miskin and Heinrich Jaeger, the William J. Friedman and Alicia Townsend Friedman Professor in Physics, expected that the dense suspensions in their experiments would behave strictly like viscous liquids, which tend to flow less freely than non-viscous liquids. Viscosity certainly does matter as the particle-laden liquid begins to exit the nozzle, but not at the moment where the drop's thinning neck breaks in two.

New behavior appears to arise from feedback between the tendencies of the liquid and what the particles within the liquid can allow. "While the liquid deforms and becomes thinner and thinner at a certain spot, the particles also have to move with that liquid. They are trapped inside the liquid," Jaeger explained. As deformation continues, the particles get in each other's way.

"Oil, honey, also would form a long thread, and this thread would become thinner and break in a way characteristic of a viscous liquid," Jaeger said. "The particles in a dense suspension conspire to interact with the liquid in a way that, when it's all said and done, a neck forms that shows signs of a split personality: It thins in a non-viscous fashion, like water, all the while exhibiting a shape more resembling that of its viscous cousins."

It took Miskin and Jaeger six months to become convinced that the viscosity of the suspending liquid was a minor player in their experiments. "It is a somewhat heretical view that this viscosity should not matter," Jaeger said. "Who would have thought that?"

Miskin and Jaeger presented their results in the March 5 online early edition and the March 20 print edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In their experiments, Miskin and Jaeger compared a variety of pure liquids to mixtures in which particles occupy more than half the volume.

"The results indicate that what we know about drop breakup from pure liquids does not allow us to predict phenomena observed in their experiments," said Jeffrey Morris, professor of chemical engineering at City College of New York. "The most striking and interesting result is the fact that, despite these being very viscous mixtures, the viscosity plays little role in the way a drop forms."

Few studies have examined droplet formation in dense suspensions. As Morris noted, such work could greatly impact applications such as inkjet printing, combustion of slurries involving coal in oil, and the drop-by-drop deposition of cells in DNA microarrays.

Scientific defiance

In these applications particles often are so densely packed that their behavior defies a simple scientific description, one that might only take into account average particle size and the fraction of the liquid that the particles occupy, Morris explained. The UChicago study showed that particles cause deformations and often protrude through the liquid, rendering any such description incomplete until fundamental questions about the interface between a liquid mixture and its surroundings are properly addressed.

"Miskin and Jaeger provide arguments for the importance of these protrusions in their work and suggest that the issue is of broader relevance to any flow where a particle-laden liquid has an interface with another fluid," Morris said.

Miskin and Jaeger verified their results by systematically evaluating different viscosities, particle sizes and suspending liquids, and developed a mathematical model to explain how the droplet necks evolve over time until they break apart.

One initially counter-intuitive prediction of this model was that larger particles should produce behavior resembling that in pure water without any particles. "If you want to make it behave more like a pure non-viscous liquid, you want to make the particles large," said Jaeger, who finds himself intrigued by nature's seemingly endless store of surprises.

Miskin and Jaeger indeed observed this when the particle size approached a significant fraction of the nozzle diameter, making the particles visible to the naked eye.

"You think you have a pretty good idea of what should happen, and instead there's a surprise at every corner. Honestly, finding surprises is what I love about this work," Jaeger said.

The greatest animated film ever made and one of the screen's great musicals hardly needs this (3D) sort of sprucing up.

What you gain in an extra, faked dimension you lose in lively, genuine beauty.

The set pieces are narcotically pleasing, especially the Busby Berkeley-style dancing-kitchenware spectacular, "Be Our Guest," and the romantic ballroom centerpiece that brings Beauty and her Beast together.

The 3-D pops out to enhance the drama or energy of scenes in which settings are large and integral to the action.

Some youthful memories are better not revisited, but this definitely isn't one of them. Sometimes you can go home again.

It is a surprise, in a time of sequels and retreads, that the new film is so fresh and altogether triumphant in its own right.

I admit it: I wrote this more than 20 years ago. But, like " Beauty and the Beast" itself, I think it stands the test of time.

Disney, please understand ... what people are actually showing up for ... they just want to see classic Disney on the big screen. The 3D is incidental.

Disney's gorgeous 1991 animated version of the classic fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast" gets the same 3D treatment that was recently given to "The Lion King."

Watching this in a theater definitely makes it feel less like a "cartoon" and more like a significant film. Cogsworth poking Le Fou in the butt with a sword aside.

One of the brightest jewels in Disney's crown, Beauty and the Beast's 3D reissue takes nothing away and makes the film's brilliance even easier to appreciate; the movie is more beautiful and timeless than it ever was.

Beauty and the Beast is just as enchanting 20 years after its initial release.

The apex of an art form, a justly celebrated classic, and the best animated movie of any sort ever put on screen at any time.

The lines have begun to show in Belle's tale, which remains enjoyable but feels more like a quaint artifact than the masterpiece it once was declared to be.

Both TANGLED EVER AFTER and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST are sure to enthrall audiences everywhere, even if the 3D doesn't really add much of anything to this animated classic.

A serviceable version of a classic fairy tale minus that crucial touch of magic.

And it is a joy to revisit the timeless pleasures of traditional Disney storytelling, with no attempts to add sizzle from celebrity voice talent or radio-friendly pop songs.

3D doesn't downplay the inherent artistry of the effort, but it doesn't enhance anything outside of ticket prices.

Beauty and the Beast looks beautiful and is sure to entertain, but this experience is superfluous at best-it was already a three-dimensional story long before these new technics.

Better remembered than seen, Beauty and the Beast has been treated unkindly not just by the years that have passed since it was released to enormous acclaim in 1991, but by a faddish 3D conversion.

Debt | Euro Zone Set To Boost Debt-crisis ... - Freedom Debt Relief

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) ? Euro zone finance ministers are likely to agree to temporarily almost double their financial backstops on Friday as one of the final moves to end the sovereign debt crisis, although Germany continues to favor a smaller increase.

The 17 countries sharing the euro have already agreed to adopt balanced-budget rules in an effort to convince markets that euro zone public finances would be sustainable.

They also agreed to slap fines on countries that run excessive budget deficits or have large imbalances in their economies.

After a deal with investors this month to restructure Greek debt, increasing the amount of money the euro zone can use to help its members cut off from markets is one of the last things policy-makers can do to boost investor confidence.

A draft statement by the ministers, obtained by Reuters [ID:nL6E8ET5NA], showed that in case of an emergency over the next 15 months, the euro zone could raise the combined firepower of its two bailout funds to 940 billion euros from 500 billion now.

But this could happen only if during that time there was a need for a new bailout for a euro zone country and the new, permanent bailout fund, called the European Stability Mechanism ( ESM ), would run out of money to finance it.

The ESM, which is to go on-line in July, will have 500 billion euros of lending capacity and the temporary European Financial Stability Facility ( EFSF ) has 440 billion euros, of which 200 billion is already earmarked for financing Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

According to the draft statement, the ministers are to agree to allow the EFSF to service its existing commitments on top of the full 500 billion euros of new money that would be provided by the ESM. The combined lending power of both funds is now capped at 500 billion euros.

Any potential new bailouts after July would be handled by the ESM. If it does not have enough money, the remaining 240 billion euros of yet uncommitted EFSF money could be used.

?The current overall ceiling for ESM/EFSF lending will be raised such that the ESM and the EFSF will be able to operate, if needed ? at their full capacity for the period during which the EFSF remains available, i.e. until mid-2013,? it said.

But Wolfgang Schaeuble, finance minister for Germany where public opinion is strongly against more money for bailouts, said 800 billion euros in the euro zone rescue aid should be enough.

?We have 500 billion euros in fresh money available, together with the programs already agreed for Ireland, Portugal and the new program for Greece. It is about 800 billion (euros),? Schaeuble told a gathering at the University of Copenhagen a day before the ministerial meeting.

?I think it?s enough,? he said, deflecting recent calls for a financial reserve of up to 1 trillion euros that would impress investors. ?To spend more money is not the solution,? he said.

Schaeuble arrived at the 800 billion by adding not only the 500 billion from the ESM and the 200 billion of commitments from the EFSF, but also 60 billion euros, now largely already spent, at the disposal of the European Financial Stability Mechanism (EFSM)and 56 billion in bilateral euro zone loans to Greece.

CONDITION FOR MORE MONEY FOR THE IMF

The European Commission and several of the world?s biggest economies have been pushing to increase the euro zone bailout capacity as much as possible, in the belief that once investors see a wall of money supporting euro zone debt, confidence would return and the rescue funds would never have to be used.

But Berlin has been against raising the bailout power in advance, saying it was ready to do so only if needed, and noting that markets have calmed down from the peak of the debt crisis.

Yet market concern about Spain, which badly missed its budget deficit target in 2011 and negotiated with the euro zone a softer target for 2012, have raised the country?s bond yields and put the bailout capability discussion back on the table.

The likely decision to allow only a temporary increase of the bailout capacity to 940 billion euros will be a compromise between the need to reassure German taxpayers and markets.

It will also give the euro zone something to present to finance ministers of the world?s 20 biggest developing and developed economies in April in Washington during talks about bigger global contributions to the International Monetary Fund.

A higher euro zone bailout capacity is a pre-condition for most G20 countries to contribute more money to the IMF.

Yet Germany may be able to call the outcome a success, too, because the ESM will not have its full 500 billion euro capacity from the start ? the capacity depends on how quickly the ESM?s capital is paid in.

The draft foresees that two tranches of ESM capital will be paid in 2012, giving the ESM a lending capacity of 200 billion euros. If added to the 200 billion of existing EFSF bailouts, the total capacity will only be 400 billion.

Even with the 240 billion euros of temporary emergency top-up, the bailout funds? capacity would still be only 640 billion.

And from mid-2013, when the next two tranches of ESM capital are to be paid in, raising the ESM/EFSF bailout capacity to 600 billion, the yet uncommitted 240 billion of EFSF money will no longer be available as a temporary emergency boost.

It would only be in 2014 that the combined bailout capacity of the two funds would effectively reach 700 billion euros.

Euro zone officials note, however, that should the ESM need its full lending capacity earlier, the capital can be raised quickly.

The ministers are also to say that they will continue to review the adequacy of the ESM capital ?as appropriate? and ?in particular when used EFSF guarantees are freed once financial assistance is repaid?.

Okay, so I don't think I have talked about this particular subject at length before, but after this weekend it merits some attention.

When my mother, God rest her soul, was 28 years old a doctor looked at her and said you have Stage 4 breast cancer, and with a full one-sided radical mastectomy, radiation, and chemotherapy, you might have two years to live.

I was four, and the ensuing fear I can now only imagine she felt was life changing.

My mother, aunt, 3 of my grandmothers sisters, my father's mother, and my father's aunt ALL had breast cancer. Amount my grandmother and her 8 siblings ALL of them have had some form of cancer. Therefore, my risk factors are freakishly high. I have already had two breast cancer scares in my life and get annual mammograms since I was just north of the tender age of 29. When I actually turn 40 (at some unknown time in the future) I will get to have them every six months! I have had genetic testing and was found NOT to have the markers for breast cancer, but the risk factors are still there.

Okay now for the rest of the story.... I walk in the race for the cure annually with a pack of my alcohol laden buddies, and this weekend one of those buddies informed me that she is scheduled to have surgery to remove........ (DAMNED DRUM ROLL)

Uterine, Ovarian, AND Cervical cancers. Yes that word is AND!

I am freaking out! She and I knew that this day would come for one or both of us which is why we are so adamant about being diligent and attentive to the care of our bodies, but my friend is sick, and for one of the few times in my life I feel helpless and inadequate.

I know logically that I can't officially do anything to change this. I know that the doctors have to do their job. I know I am emotional support. I know all of the real things that I can be.

Heart to Heart at Home: Family Fun ? Mom's Birthday | tillmidnight.biz

?It?s my wife?s birthday tomorrow. Last week I asked her what she wanted as a present. ?Oh, I don?t know?, she said. ?Just give me something with diamonds?. So I got her a pack of playing cards. Didn?t go over so well.?

Actually, I could have fun with playing cards, but I got something a lot more fun and useful for my birthday! Yes, it was my birthday yesterday, and I failed to post on schedule because I was visiting my mom most of the day and celebrating at home later. My husband and kids had made plans for the evening that were way beyond my expectations.

My daughter cooked a lovely dinner of Eggplant?Parmesan, one of my favorite meals. She also baked a cake at the same time, and told me it was ?my job? to stay out of the kitchen. That was enough to hear those words, imagine if I could get paid to stay out of the kitchen ? what a dream job! I had plenty of other things to do so I was truly grateful for the break.

I was not expecting gifts, cards and flowers are enough for me. However, after dinner the kids brought a stack of 3 gifts into the living room. ?What is this?? I thought. To my great surprise they had pooled their money and bought me a Wii Fit. They knew I was trying to improve my health and lose some weight so they found a used but very good condition Wii, board and game at Game Stop. That?s what all their whispering and the secret trip on Tuesday night was about.

What was really fun though was sitting around the living room together creating avatars for each of us. We were rolling on the floor laughing as we argued about which eyes or eyebrows, mouth, facial hair or hairstyle each person should have. Then I had my oldest son demo the games for me, and my daughter and younger son had to get in on the action too. Their competitiveness is entertaining. Finally I took my turn and got some pretty good scores on balance. We must have spent at least 4 hours playing together. This was one of the best birthdays ever because we were all together having fun. Now I need to get fit, but it looks like that?s going to be fun too!

94% Once Upon a Time in Anatolia

Film critic Molly Haskell famously described 'The Godfather' as "grandly mournful," a beautifully apt description. 'Once Upon a Time in Anatolia' is just as mournful but without the grandeur -- and without a story. It beats me why 'Anatolia' took second prize at Cannes last year. But 2011 was a tough year in general for Cannes. Top prize went to "The Tree of Life," which in my view was run-of-the-mill Buddhism tarted up with kaleidoscopic visuals. In my review of 'Tree,' I described it as a bloated over-statement. I'd describe 'Anatolia' as a bloated non-statement. If it can be imagined, 'Anatolia' has even fewer ideas than 'Tree.' And Cannes was all aflutter over these two films? It must have been a very undistinguished group of films in competition last year. 'Anatolia' is a long, slow, boring dirge. Turkish filmmaker Nuri Ceylan, who has a very good reputation among serious cinephiles (but this is the first Ceylan film I have seen), takes a bunch of middle-aged male actors out to the remote, frighteningly barren countryside of Turkey in the middle of the night and follows them around with his camera as they amble about in a sleep-deprived stupor. They are playing policemen on a murder investigation. Why they are conducting an investigation in the middle of the night is never explained. Their caravan of broken-down vehicles pulls up to one barren location after the next, and all the men look around the ground for clues. Most of them are overweight, semi-educated imbeciles -- peasants with a high school diploma. The only one with real intelligence is a doctor, who inexplicably is along for the ride. That doctor becomes the heart of the movie, and gradually he does emerge as a slightly interesting character. But only slightly. He, like all the other characters, has nothing to do, so his character can only be contemplated in the abstract. In the last half-hour of this overly long film (two-and-a-half hours), I started to feel that Ceylan was a true artist. Probably only a minor one, but a true one. He does have something mournful to say about life and about people that is genuinely artistic. I just don't think he captured his artistic viewpoint very effectively here, either in the writing of the script or the directing of the film shoot. The cinematography, art direction, and editing is consistently pedestrian. My hunch is that he consciously chose a flat style -- flat neo-realist style is very popular in high-art cinema these days (see also Iran's "A Separation," which has become such an art-house hit in America and is likely to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Film). But I don't think it served Ceylan's purpose at all. I can appreciate that he wanted to portray his characters as mind-numbingly boring and flat. But when the man behind the camera starts to seem mind-numbingly boring and flat, something has gone wrong -- at least for me.
