Mighty Death Pop is on its way out this August. Mighty Death Pop implies many things in the title, but the most obvious is that Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope hope the album to be a cog in the wheel of pop?s destruction. But while Juggalos and Juggalettes are pondering the meaning behind Insane Clown Posse?s new album?s title, this writer wouldn?t be surprised if Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope themselves, and Psychopathic Record label executives, weren?t secretly fretting over Mighty Death Pop sales. But could they fix this with ICP free songs?
?
The musical landscape has changed a lot since the last time an Insane Clown Posse new album came out. Fans of most music are no longer interested in purchasing whole albums like Mighty Death? Pop.
Instead, our music market has turned into a singles culture, one where individual songs off Insane Clown Posse?s new album are destined to be more successful than Insane Clown Posse?s new album alone.
?
A gloomier prognosis would be that our music market has turned into a free music culture, where ICP free songs would be taken more than anything with a price tag. ?
?
In fact, many music industry experts would probably recommend that Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope release ICP free songs before the release of Mighty Death Pop. Doing so would undoubtedly generate some buzz around the Mighty Death Pop release, and put new music in the hands of Juggalos who have been more than hungry for Insane Clown Posse?s new album to arrive.
?
3 years ago, when Insane Clown Posse?s new album was not Mighty Death Pop, but instead Bang! Boom! Pow! was Insane Clown Posse?s new album, suggesting that ICP free songs be included on the new release would have been received poorly.
But that?s because there hadn?t been enough time for the marketing minds in the music industry to properly process the power this idea could have.
?
Think about it. People like free things, and music is no exception. So when ICP free songs are released to run wild on the Internet, fans are going to swallow them up, and this act is going to lead to more and more and more fans doing the exact same. With their appetites just barely wetted for Insane Clown Posse?s new album with this ICP free songs experiment, Juggalos would be rabid for more to come on the actual Insane Clown Posse new album. Make sense?
?
Whether ICP?s management will take any risks like unleashing some ICP free songs when marketing Mighty Death Pop remains to be seen, but the bigger risk would not be trying anything innovative at all when marketing Mighty Death Pop. Here?s to hoping someone gives it a try!?

Phytoplankton key to a healthy planet says Canada Research Chair at the forefront of phytoplankton research
Phytoplankton Key to a Healthy Planet says Canada Research Chair at the Forefront of Phytoplankton Research
Maria (Maite) Maldonado, Canada Research Chair in Phytoplankton Trace Metal Physiology at The University of British Columbia, has made understanding the intricacies of marine phytoplankton her life's work. These tiny, single-celled algae, which act as a natural sponge for carbon dioxide and are a critical part of the global carbon cycle, may play a key role in ensuring the health of the planet.
Maldonado will discuss her research and answer questions from the media as part of the February 17 Canada Press Breakfast on the Arctic and oceans. The breakfast will be part of the 178th annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, to be held in Vancouver, and will feature a variety of prominent researchers.
Why the emphasis on phytoplankton? Phytoplankton form the base of the ocean food chain, have an integral role in controlling global warming and provide more than half of our oxygen supply.
Each year, phytoplankton are responsible for converting about 45 gigatons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to organic carbon. Of this, approximately 16 gigatons is transferred to the waters of the deep ocean in a process commonly referred to as a "biological carbon pump."
The deep ocean is one of the Earth's natural carbon "sinks" and will hold carbon from the atmosphere for centuries. The biological carbon pump controls the carbon dioxide content in the upper ocean, which in turn regulates atmospheric carbon dioxide levelsand, as a result, climate change.
Scientists have established that low iron concentrations in ocean water limit phytoplankton growth, since phytoplankton use iron to photosynthesize and grow. In these iron-limited environments (which make up approximately 30 per cent of the global ocean), the biological pump becomes inefficient and the ocean's ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is reduced.
For the past 20 years, Maldonado has been examining how phytoplankton adapt to and survive in, these iron-limited environments.
"In essence, what we are illustrating is that they have evolved to deal with iron limitation, and we are trying to figure out how they have adapted to take up iron more efficiently," she says.
"In the process of answering these questions, what we have seen is the importance of other trace metals. For example, copper for many years has been thought of as a toxic trace metal for phytoplankton," says Maldonado. "We know that phytoplankton need a little bit of copper . . . but what we have discovered is that phytoplankton that are iron-limited need more copper than normal. Iron-limited phytoplankton have a very good transport system for iron, and in order for this transport system to operate properly they need copper. So we are discovering uses of these other metals that we didn't know of."
In addition to copper, Maldonado and her team have also uncovered how the intracellular iron content of phytoplankton affects their ability to acquire other elements, such as nitrate and cadmium.
Maldonado's findings on cadmium have already helped British Columbia's oyster aquaculture industry, which had been suffering high losses because of elevated cadmium levels in ocean waters. Her team developed specific guidelines on the best culture depth, seed size and site selection, and developed a model with indicators that farmers can routinely measure against to schedule their oyster harvests when cadmium levels are at their lowest. The result has been a more robust oyster industry in British Columbiawith higher yields and healthier oysters.
The Canada Press Breakfast on the Arctic and oceans is part of the 178th annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The breakfast will be held in Room 306 of the Vancouver Convention Centre at 8 a.m. on February 17, 2012, and will feature Canadian research experts from across natural sciences, engineering, health, social sciences and humanities.

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Reuters - Defense lawyers made a case for Allen Stanford's innocence on Friday in a courtroom filled with people who said he had stolen millions of dollars of their savings.
ScienceDaily (Feb. 17, 2012) ? A University of Arkansas biologist has created a sketch of what the first common ancestor of plants and algae may have looked like. He explains that primitive organisms are not always simple.
The image appears as part of a "Perspective" article in the Feb. 17 issue of Science.
Fred Spiegel, professor of biological sciences in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, suggests what microscopic parts would have been present in this common ancestor based on findings by Dana Price of Rutgers University and his colleagues, who examined the genome of a freshwater microscopic algae and determined that it showed that algae and plants are derived from one common ancestor. This ancestor formed from a merger between some protozoan-like host and cyanobacterium, a kind of bacteria that use photosynthesis to make energy, that "moved in" and became the chloroplast of this first alga. Price and his colleagues show that today's algae and plants have to be descended from this first alga, but they give no idea what it looked like.
"The work that Price and his group did nailed down what the relationships are" between this organism, the algae and plants, and all other eukaryotes, organisms that have a true nucleus in their cells, Spiegel said. "Once you know that, you can compare the structure of cells and characteristics you see in algae and plants with other eukaryotes and get a reasonable idea of what the original critter must have looked like."
For many years, scientists have speculated that the original ancestor of plants and algae must have originated from a protozoan-like organism and cyanobacteria. They theorized that at some point in the distant past the cyanobacteria became part of the other organism and created the first alga, which in turn created the opportunity for the growth into the biodiversity found in plants that we see today.
However, other scientists argued that the diversity and complexity of plants and algae suggest multiple events where different organisms merged. They pointed out that some members of the plant kingdom have simple structures and therefore must be more primitive than others.
Price and his colleagues' studied the genome of an obscure alga called Cyanophora. Their results strongly suggest that the first alga arose about a billion to a billion and a half years ago. This alga became the ancestor to the group of algae containing Cyanophora, plus the group of algae that includes the red seaweeds, plus the group that includes the green algae and the land plants. Together, these organisms form the super group called Plantae.
Based on this research, Spiegel has put forth a hypothetical snapshot of what the common ancestor of Plantae, the "first alga," might have looked like.
"The common ancestor of Plantae was an organism with very complex cells and a complex life cycle," Spiegel said. While some members of the super group Plantae may have less complex cells and life cycles, this does not mean they pre-date the common ancestor. "They're simpler because they lost parts, not because they originated that way."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Europe needs to take the reins to tackle its debt crisis and prevent a spread that could damage the global economy, senior U.S. officials said on Thursday, as they stressed that more funding from international lenders is not what Europe needs.
One official also told the hearing by the Senate Banking Committee that an economic slowdown in Europe could affect some U.S. foreign policy goals.
Lael Brainard, Treasury's under secretary for international affairs, described the U.S. economic stake in Europe as "immense" and said although the U.S. recovery has strengthened recently, it remained vulnerable to a potential worsening of conditions in Europe.
But she stressed Europe's ability to address its own problems.
"The challenge Europe faces is within the capacity of the Europeans to manage, and the administration has been clear with our international partners that we are not seeking additional funding for the IMF," Brainard told the hearing.
Resources of the International Monetary Fund "cannot substitute for a strong and credible European firewall and response," she added.
Brainard, who is Treasury's top diplomat abroad, also said that although the direct exposure of U.S. banks to the European countries already under bailout programs, such as Greece, are modest, there is still a wider potential impact.
"Our banking system still has material exposure to the core of Europe and to the broader banking system, which could be impacted if financial stress were to broaden in Europe," Brainard said.
Recent attention has focused on efforts by Greece to clinch a $170-billion bailout and on the social unrest unleashed as international lenders have called for austerity measures.
In response to questions, Brainard conceded that Greece faces "very daunting" economic short-run prospects and suggested said some better-off European countries could help by stimulating their own economies.
"There has been some talk by European leaders about a growth agenda but we think there's more scope in the short run for the internal dynamics of the euro area to (seek) stronger growth in the surplus countries," she said.
Countries in the southern periphery of the euro zone region, including Greece, Italy and Portugal, are struggling with heavy debt loads, but northern European countries like Germany and France are on much sounder economic ground.
The hearing also included officials from the State Department and the Federal Reserve, giving lawmakers a chance to assess conditions if Europe's distress deepens.
Under Secretary of State Robert Hormats said slower European growth and tighter budgets "could have an impact on some of our foreign policy goals" and made clear that the United States expects its overseas partners to meet commitments.
"Whatever happens on the financial and economic front, our foreign policy message has been clear: It is important that transatlantic partners continue to dedicate resources to key priorities, and maintain critical deployments, both military and civilian," Hormats said.
So far, there was no evidence that Europe was any less willing to impose tough sanctions on Iran, and the United States will continue to increase that pressure on Iran, Hormats said.
Steven Kamin, director of the Fed's division of international finance, told the committee that financial stresses in Europe were "undoubtedly spilling over to the United States" and could continue doing so.
"Difficulty acquiring dollar funding by European and other financial institutions may ultimately make it harder and more costly for U.S. households and businesses to get loans," Kamin said.
He said that while it was difficult to gauge all the effects from Europe's problems on U.S. affairs, "it is clear that the situation in Europe poses a significant risk to U.S. economic activity and bears close watching."

Freddie Solomon, a wide receiver for the Dolphins and 49ers who was a key player on two Super Bowl-winning teams, has died at the age of 59.
Solomon was diagnosed with colon and liver cancer nine months ago, and his health took a turn for the worse last week, the Tampa Tribune reports.
As a quarterback at the University of Tampa in the early 1970s Solomon did sensational things with the ball in his hands, rushing for 3,299 yards, which at the time was the all-time NCAA record for a quarterback. Although the NFL didn?t have any place for his style of quarterback in those days, Don Shula was enamored enough with Solomon?s talent that he used a second-round draft pick on him in 1975.
After three seasons in Miami, Solomon was traded to San Francisco, where he became a great fit in Bill Walsh?s offense. His best season was 1981, when he caught 59 passes for 969 yards and eight touchdowns. Following that season the 49ers won the Super Bowl, getting there when Joe Montana hit Dwight Clark in the end zone for ?The Catch? to win the NFC Championship Game. Solomon was the first option on that play.
Solomon retired after the 1985 season, and he came to be known in Tampa as much for his good works in the community as he was for his football heroics. He did outreach to young people through his work in community relations with the Hillsborough County Sheriff?s Office, and he teamed up with Eddie DeBartolo Jr., who owned the 49ers when Solomon played there, to provide an annual Christmas celebration for foster children.
Solomon is survived by his wife of 33 years, Dee Solomon.

A culture of kindness
When did you feel you had a direct experience of being in a culture of kindness in Shambhala and what it was that made you experience that kindness?
?Shambhala seems to be changing with the warmth of the Sakyong. There is a need to reduce things to the simplest elements, like kindness. Maybe these vows are one step along that path.?
A lack of kindness
When have you felt you were definitely not part of a culture of kindness in Shambhala?and what made you feel this way? What could you do to make sure others do not have that experience?
?I had tears coming up because I remember that situation so clearly. For me the most painful part of feeling things weren?t kind was when some sangha members had ideas which they expressed about how other members should embody compassion or basic goodness. Those kind of dialogues became very divisive ? it wasn?t so much about how we were relating to the individuals, but how we related amongst ourselves. I think since then we have matured. The second situation there was less ?should-ing?. We?re on a path, and I feel a sense of progression, development of our ability to embody basic goodness.?
Shambhala in society
How are you bringing the Shambhala teachings and practice into your life and work in society?
Being a parent in Shambhala ? there is a feeling of disconnect between the family and Shambhala?s long programs and parenting as a bodhisattva practice, and the family as the centre of society. In some ways, the children are the future of humanity, and I have some sense that the children are not part of the Mandala. As a leader, this conversation can be between the child and others and being the children into the centre in some way and dissolve barriers between secular life and Shambhala life. Childcare should not be an afterthought. How can this be beneficial to children and teens??
~~ Please feel free to explore the full report.
I made this film about the Shambhala and Society Report in London at the Imperial War Museum and the Dalai Lama?s Peace Garden:
The idea of obesity as an epidemic blows my mind. Each year the numbers just keep on rising. And unfortunately it leaves the smaller fit population to lead an example to the kids.
Kids are going to be the only ones to turn around what most Americans have done to our health. And guess who is going to teach them? Well considering that many of the children that have weight issues are most likely picking bad diet and exercise habits up from poorly nutritional and physical parents its up to us.
In fact, 1 in 5 kids today are considered overweight or c. And research shows that the number one factor is parental influence. It?s true that fat parents tend to raise fat kids, unfortunately.
The trick for kids is to learn at a young age. It is so hard for anyone to reverse the teachings and thoughts that have been taught for so long. For example, when I gained weight in college I had to teach myself how to be healthy since I had not had anyone previously to teach me.
Think of it as learning a second language. Try learning Spanish at 30 and chances are it is going to be tough, but for a 4 year old they can pick it up easily!
I was just read an article (which I am going to post the link to a the botton) where they are teaching weight lifting to middle schoolers. I think this is great. When I was in middle school PE consisted of running between cones for a few rounds then playing kick ball. But this is teaching kids a long term life style to be healthy and stay in shape.
I have not recommended young kids need to be bodylifting but they should have an understanding of light weight training and technique. What they learn today will potentially affect USA later. They need to learn how to include exercise in their lifestyle now so when they become adults it isn?t a rude awakening? Nitendo will not teach these lessons.

States-side fans of video game consoles, from the first Nintendo Entertainment System to its modern successor the Wii, know what it's like for a game that looks awesome to only come out in Japan.
At one time, for instance, there was a perception among Japanese game publishers that North American audiences didn't have the patience for console role-playing games, and so several installments of Square-Enix's Final Fantasy series took more than a decade to arrive in the form of remakes. Meanwhile, American dating sim fans have had to either import games or build their own, using open-source software like Ren'Py.
Japanese game publishers like Square-Enix and Capcom are starting to bring their games to Google's open-source Android operating system now, even "name-brand" ones that have sold well on consoles like the Nintendo DS. The problem? Most of these games are only available in Japan, and will only be there for the foreseeable future. And some of them don't even use Google's Android Market.
Square-Enix -- Final Fantasy, Chaos Rings, Chrono Trigger
According to Anoop Gantayat of Andriasang.com, Square-Enix is bringing some of its greatest console hits to Android, including a port of the iOS version of the original Final Fantasy. It's also bringing the former iOS exclusive, Chaos Rings, to Android for the first time, along with the cult classic Chrono Trigger. A Dragon Quest game helps to round out its offerings; Crystal Defenders, a tower defense game based on the world of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, is the only title that's currently available in North America.
Much like how Square-Enix created its own online service, PlayOnline, when it launched its first MMORPG, the company is creating its own Android marketplace to sell its games on. The market will be exclusive to Japanese cellphone carrier KDDI at first.
Capcom -- Phoenix Wright
The visual novel / hidden object series about an "Ace Attorney" is seeing its first three games remastered and brought to both iOS and Android, according to Spencer of SiliconEra ... at least, in Japan. No word yet on a release date or whether or not they'll ever be brought to America, despite the objections of North American fans everywhere.
NIS -- Disgaea: Netherworld
The (extremely quirky) tactics-based RPG Disgaea has already received an Android version in Japan; a microtransaction-based one where you play for free and buy items to help. According to Kotaku's Mike Fahey, however, this one is actually coming to North America in the near future, giving fans something to look forward to.

DENVER ? The nation's leanest state is taking aim at junk food in school cafeterias as it considers the nation's toughest school trans-fat ban.
A Colorado House committee was scheduled to hear a bill Thursday to forbid any trans-fat in school food ? not just the food served through regular cafeteria lunches.
That would mean vending machines, after-school bake sales and popular "a la carte" items on lunch lines such as ice creams or pizza would have to be produced without artery-clogging trans fats.
Several states already limit trans-fat in school cafeterias, but none has a trans-fat ban that extends before and after school. Delaware and California, for example, both ban school food with trans-fat, but not at all after-school activities.
Colorado has the nation's lowest obesity rate, but young people are becoming fatter along with their counterparts in other states. In 2007, Colorado's childhood obesity rate was the nation's third-best. By 2010 it ranked 23rd according to the Colorado Health Foundation, a change researchers attribute to sedentary behavior and a growing childhood poverty rate.
Lawmakers who sponsored the trans-fat ban ? a Republican and a Democrat ? said Colorado needs to step up healthy eating among children to hang onto its prized leanest-state title.
"Colorado is one of the healthiest states but has the one of the highest rates of childhood obesity. So if we're going to do something about that, this is a step in the right direction," said one of the bill's sponsors, House Education Chairman Tom Massey, R-Poncha Springs.
The American Heart Association is working to assure skeptical Colorado lawmakers that the trans-fat ban wouldn't forbid childhood faves such as pizza and French fries. The bill also wouldn't affect naturally occurring trans-fat, such as that in beef and dairy.
"You can still have the exact same food. You'd have to find different ways of preparing them," association lobbyist Susanna Morris said.
Colorado's Department of Education says it doesn't have a statewide trans-fat standard. A spokeswoman for the state education department, Janelle Asmus, said a department review "found the amount of trans-fat in a school meal to be minimal" but added that the review didn't include items for sale in vending machines and after-school activities such as bake sales.
The Legislature has not estimated how much the change would cost local schools. Supporters insist that schools could serve the same foods, just switch to trans-fat-free shortening and oils. The bill would require no changes to school kitchens or how food is prepared.
Colorado's best-known school nutritionist says the complete trans-fat ban is do-able. Ann Cooper, author of the "Renegade Lunch Lady" blog, is in charge of food service at the Boulder Valley district, thought to be the only public school district in the state that is trans-fat free.
"We don't serve convenience food, we don't serve junk food," Cooper said. "That's where the trans-fat is. You cook from scratch, it's not a problem cutting all the trans-fat."
If approved, Colorado's trans-fat ban would take effect next school year. Supporters say the proposal may be amended to give schools more time to comply, a change they accept. The bill may also be amended to exempt fundraisers from the ban, protecting many sporting-event concessions such as nachos.

ScienceDaily (Feb. 1, 2012) ? Consistent appraisals of homes and businesses outfitted with photovoltaic (PV) installations are a real challenge for the nation's real estate industry, but a new tool developed by Sandia National Laboratories and Solar Power Electric? and licensed by Sandia addresses that issue. Sandia scientists, in partnership with Jamie Johnson of Solar Power Electric?, have developed PV ValueTM, an electronic form to standardize appraisals. Funded by the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, the tool will provide appraisers, real estate agents and mortgage underwriters with more accurate values for PV systems.
"Previous methods for appraising PV installations on new or existing construction have been challenging because they were not using standard appraisal practices," said Geoff Klise, the Sandia researcher who co-developed the tool. "Typically, appraisers develop the value of a property improvement based on comparable properties with similar improvements as well as prevailing market conditions. If there aren't PV systems nearby, there is no way to make an improvement comparison. When a PV system is undervalued or not valued at all, it essentially ignores the value of the electricity being produced and the potential savings over the lifetime of the system. By developing a standard methodology for appraisers when comparables are not available, homeowners will have more incentive to install PV systems, even if they consider moving a few years after system installation."
The tool uses an Excel spreadsheet, tied to real-time lending information and market fluctuations, to determine the worth of a PV system. An appraiser enters such variables as the ZIP code where the system is located, the system size in watts, the derate factor -- which takes into account shading and other factors that affect a system's output -- tracking, tilt and azimuth, along with a few other factors, and the spreadsheet returns the value of the system as a function of a pre-determined risk spread. The solar resource calculation in the spreadsheet is based on the PVWattsTM simulator developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, which allows the spreadsheet to value a PV system anywhere in the U.S.
"With PV Value?, appraisers can quickly calculate the present value of energy that a PV system can be estimated to produce during its remaining useful lifetime, similar to the appraisal industry's income approach," said Johnson. "Additionally, a property owner thinking about installing PV can now estimate the remaining present value of energy for their future PV system and what it could be worth to a purchaser of their property at any point in time in the event a sale of the property takes place before the estimated payback date is reached."
The tool is being embraced by the Appraisal Institute, which is the nation's largest professional association of real estate appraisers. "From my perspective as an appraiser, I see that this is a great tool to assist the appraiser in valuations, and it connects to the Appraisal Institute's recent Residential Green and Energy Efficient Addendum. It's an easy, user-friendly spreadsheet that will not bog the appraiser down with a lot of extra time in calculations, and if they fill out the addenda properly, they'll be able to make the inputs and come up with some numbers fairly quickly," said Sandy Adomatis, SRA, a real estate appraiser and member of the Appraisal Institute.
Although the tool is licensed for solar PV installations, it could be used for other large green features in a home that generate income, such as wind turbines. The spreadsheet, user manual and webinar explaining the tool are available for download at http://pv.sandia.gov/pvvalue.
Solar Power Electric? located in Port Charlotte, Fla., is an electrical contracting and solar integration company specializing in the installation of commercial and residential photovoltaic systems.

ISLAMABAD ? A female university professor sent a packet containing anthrax to the office of Pakistan's prime minister in October last year, his spokesman said Wednesday, an incident that will fuel security concerns in a country that is home to top al-Qaida leaders and other extremists.
No one was made ill, and her motive was not clear, said Akram Shaheedi, a spokesman for Yousuf Raza Gilani.
He said tests at laboratories run by Pakistan's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in Islamabad since confirmed the substance in the package was anthrax.
Shaheedi said the package was received in October 2011.
He initially told The Associated Press it was received 12 months ago, but called back to say he was mistaken.
He didn't say why he was making the news public now. He also didn't say whether the woman, a professor at Jamshoro University in Sindh province, had been arrested.
Islamist militants and other rebels have carried out scores of attacks against the Pakistani state in recent years, but have not been known to send letters or packages containing toxic material.
It's been less than a year since CyberLink revealed PowerDVD 11 and now along comes PowerDVD 12. Among the new features in 12 is the ability to sync media -- we can only assume this excludes protected content -- to PowerDVD Mobile for Android as well as automatically transcode videos for most of the popular mobile devices. Said mobile clients are only free, though, if you opt of the $99 Ultra version of PowerDVD. PowerDVD Mobile is available for everyone else for $19.99, as well as PowerDVD Remote for $4.99. Overall it seems like an iterative update that might not hit the spot at $45 (for an upgrade), but there are other new features like OGG and FLAC support that might just push you over the edge.
