Battery Monitoring Gains More Precision | Hybrid Cars

Published October 24, 2012

By Philippe Crowe

freescale_webgrab

Electric vehicles battery monitoring is improving, gaining more precision with the newest sensor released by Freescale Semiconductor, the MM9Z1J638 Xtrinsic battery sensor.

This is the industry?s first CAN-based battery sensor that accurately measures the voltage, current and temperature of lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries, as well as calculating the battery state ? all while operating in harsh automotive conditions.

Accurate knowledge of these battery parameters has become critical due to the increase in hybrid vehicles and overall electronic content, as well as the introduction of start-stop systems in automobiles.

Freescale?s MM9Z1J638 Xtrinsic battery sensor offers a robust and cost-effective solution for designers, enabling precision measurement of key battery parameters in automotive and industrial applications. The device integrates an S12Z microcontroller (MCU) and a SMARTMOS analog control integrated circuit in a single-package solution, providing low power consumption in automotive and industrial environments.

The MM9Z1J638 Xtrinsic battery sensor is fully AEC-Q100 automotive qualified for operation from -40?C to +125?C and comes in a small form factor, 7 x 7mm QFN package.

In today?s vehicles, the rising number of electrical loads presents a challenge to the battery. It must be able to provide enough energy to crank the engine, as well as act as a passive power source to support new functions such as start-stop and intelligent alternator control. Precise knowledge of the battery?s state of health (SOH), state of charge (SOC) and state of function (SOF) can provide early detection of impending failure, the leading cause of vehicle breakdowns due to the electrical system. In addition, the power consumption of the battery sensor itself must be as low as possible to ensure energy efficiency.

?Devices such as the intelligent battery sensor are becoming necessary as electronic content and start-stop systems in automobiles continue to increase in quantity and importance,? said Gavin Woods, vice president and general manager of Freescale?s Analog & Mixed-Signal Products Division. ?We are providing the industry?s first CAN-based, automotive-qualified and cost-effective solution that enables precise monitoring of critical battery parameters.?

Freescale?s fully integrated battery monitoring device includes a two-channel, 16-bit analog to digital converter (ADC) for simultaneous measurement of battery voltage and current and an independent 16-bit ADC for temperature measurement. The battery sensor provides accurate monitoring with high resolution even in worst-case conditions.

The battery sensor can communicate these parameters at intervals or on request from the in-vehicle network via either the LIN or CAN protocols (CAN requires an external PHY).

The MM9Z1J638 supports precise current measurement via an external shunt resistor at the negative terminal of the battery and precise battery voltage measurement via a series resistor at the positive terminal.

The integrated temperature sensor combined with battery mounting allows accurate battery temperature measurement. Eternal temperature sensor inputs allow accurate cell temperature measurement.

The automotive-grade MM9Z1I638 and MM9Z1J638 devices are scheduled to be broadly available by the second half of 2013.

Mayor Nutter Signs Energy Benchmarking Ordinance ? Greenworks ...

MAYOR NUTTER SIGNS TWO CITY COUNCIL ORDINANCES

?

Philadelphia, October 9, 2012 ? Mayor Michael A. Nutter signed two City Council Bills, one that will improve energy efficiency and sustainability in the City of Philadelphia, and the other will increase residential fire safety.

?

Mayor Nutter first signed Bill No. 120428 and talked about the importance of the City being as energy-efficient as possible.? ?In order to make Philadelphia the greenest city in America, everyone needs to do their part. Energy benchmarking and disclosure will encourage people and organizations to think how to be more energy efficient and present opportunities for improvement in energy management,? said Mayor Nutter.

?

Bill No. 120428 amends the ?Energy Conservation? portion of The Philadelphia Code to require large commercial buildings to benchmark and report energy and water usage data. The bill?s purpose is not only to make organizations aware of their energy use, but also identify opportunities for improvement and assist in establishing energy consumption baselines that will help set future goals. The Mayor?s Office of Sustainability will issue regulations this fall and begin doing outreach and education in the winter and spring.? Building owners will need to benchmark their buildings using Energy Start Portfolio Manager and report the results to the City beginning in 2013. The following year, the City will make this information available to the public.

?

Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds-Brown echoed the Mayor?s remarks saying, ?Energy benchmarking will provide the critical information and data necessary to make Philadelphia a more energy efficient city. Inevitably, we will hand over the keys to this planet to our children and grandchildren. ?I join the Mayor in making sure that to the best of our ability, we hand them a more sustainable and healthier planet to grow and prosper.?

?

Mayor Nutter also signed Bill No. 120278, amending the Philadelphia Fire Code to require smoke alarms in one- and two-family dwellings to have 10-year, non-removable batteries, effective January 9, 2013.? Once installed, the smoke alarms will not need the battery replaced for the life of the alarm.? One- and two-family dwellings built on or after January 1, 1988, and apartment dwelling units, are not affected as those dwellings are required to have hard-wired smoke alarms.? Smoke alarms are required on each level of a dwelling, including the basement.? On the floors with one or more bedrooms, the smoke alarm for that floor is required to be installed in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms.? Installation should be in accordance with the manufacturer?s instruction booklet.

?This measure will make the job of the Philadelphia Fire Department ? ensuring the safety of our homes and businesses ? that much easier.? Tragedies can be prevented when working smoke alarms are present.?? Fire Commissioner Ayers added, ?Ten-year, lithium battery-powered smoke alarms provide our citizens with a longer period of Optimum Fire Protection and Community Risk Reduction.?

Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr., the primary sponsor of the bill, said, ?With this bill fire safety is no longer obsolete.? No longer is the reminder change the clock; change the battery relevant. I would like to thank Commissioner Ayers; the Fire Department, and it?s volunteer fire safety representatives; local 22; and the cooperation of residents, commercial owners and support systems who have helped reduce fire fatalities and injuries throughout our great City.?

Ancient art of henna painting practiced at Chattanooga Market ...

During a four-month stint living in India, Jessica Kitchens drank in the local culture, including henna painting.

?I observed a lot and practiced,? Kitchens said of the ancient art.

Henna is used in Indian and Middle Eastern cultures to stain the skin in traditional, intricate patterns.

Before weddings, women gather and are painted with henna.

Kitchens said she never officially learned how to paint with henna but has spent the last couple of years practicing based on what she observed.

At the Chattanooga Market Culture Fest on Sunday, Kitchens appeared confident as she applied a homemade henna paste to the hand of Elizabeth Emmons, creating an intricate floral pattern.

Emmons, who works in human resources at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, said she has been spending time learning about cultural diversity and traditions.

?I thought this would be something educational and fun,? she said of her henna tattoo. ?I always thought (henna) was very pretty and representative of Indian culture.?

Working from a photograph, Kitchens applied a pattern in tiny lines and dots to Emmons? hand.

According to the Encyclopedia of Henna, henna use began in the late Neolithic period and has been incorporated into aspects of Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism and Islam.

IMF forecasts slowing world economic growth

TOKYO (AP) ? Plagued by uncertainty and fresh setbacks, the world economy has weakened further and will grow more slowly over the next year, the International Monetary Fund says in its latest forecast.

Advanced economies are risking recession, the international lending organization said in a quarterly update of its World Economic Outlook, and the malaise is spreading to more dynamic emerging economies such as China.

The IMF forecasts that the world economy will expand 3.3 percent this year, down from the estimate of 3.5 percent growth it issued in July. Its forecast for growth in 2013 is 3.6 percent, down from 3.9 percent three months ago and 4.1 percent in April.

Underpinning that bleaker scenario are the assumptions that Europe will continue to ease monetary policy and that the U.S. will avert a crushing blow to growth by fending off a so-called "fiscal cliff" that could result from a failure to reach a compromise on its budget law and tax cuts.

Conditions could worsen if the United States doesn't deal with its budget crisis soon, the IMF said.

"Downside risks have increased and are considerable," the fund said. It said its forecasts are based "on critical policy action in the euro area and the United States, and it is very difficult to estimate the probability that this action will materialize."

The IMF has urged the U.S. to raise the ceiling on the level of debt the government can issue, which is capped by law. In August 2011, a battle between the Obama administration and Congress over raising the limit wasn't resolved until the U.S. almost defaulted on its debt.

Global efforts to ease credit and increase the amount of money available for lending are helping, but appear to be yielding diminishing returns, as are fiscal stimulus policies, the IMF warned.

"Because uncertainty is high, confidence is low, and financial sectors are weak, the significant fiscal achievements have been accompanied by disappointing growth or recessions," it said.

Among other things, it says governments need to do more to relieve the burden of household debt that is constraining spending power and thus crippling demand.

While large corporations pay record low rates for credit, households and small companies struggle to obtain bank loans, it said.

Fortifying domestic demand is all the more crucial given weakening trade trends. The IMF forecasts that growth in world trade volume will slump to 3.2 percent this year from 5.8 percent last year and 12.6 percent in 2010.

"Low growth and uncertainty in advanced economies are affecting emerging market and developing economies through both trade and financial channels, adding to homegrown weaknesses," the IMF's chief economist, Olivier Blanchard, said in a statement.

But he told reporters Tuesday a more optimistic scenario was possible if the right measures are taken, such as fixing banks in European countries and reducing the uncertainty about U.S. policies.

"The case for an upside scenario is stronger than it has been," he said at the opening of the IMF meeting in Tokyo.

He noted some positive signs in the U.S. economy such as a turnaround in the housing market. The IMF also sees the slowdown in China as part of a shift from the past double-digit growth to a rate that is "sustainable," a process he described as "a soft landing." And the slowdown in developed nations had pushed down exports, the key factor behind the slowdown in China, Blanchard and other IMF officials said.

The IMF raised the U.S. growth forecast slightly, to 2.2 percent this year from 2 percent in July. For 2013, though, it expects U.S. growth of 2.1 percent, down from 2.3 percent.

Among the 17 nations that use the euro, low growth in the major "core economies," such as Germany and France, will be offset by outright contractions in the smaller economies, leading real gross domestic product to fall by about 0.4 percent in 2012, the IMF said.

It forecasts growth in the euro area will stay flat in the first half of 2013 and tick up to about 1 percent in the second half of the year, the IMF said.

The report was released just ahead of the World Bank-IMF annual meeting, which is being held in Tokyo this week. The gathering of some 10,000 bankers, executives and officials will likely refocus attention on Japan's failure to escape its own economic slump two decades after its own financial implosion in the early 1990s.

The IMF said it expects growth in Japan to hit 2.2 percent this year but to slacken further as reconstruction from the March 2011 disasters winds down, falling to 1.2 percent in 2013.

Japan, whose population is both shrinking and aging faster than elsewhere, is confronting problems of high debt and stagnation, it said.

As usual, the bright spots are developing economies that were less affected by the global financial crisis, where rising employment and strong demand will help support growth, the IMF said.

China's economy will likely expand 7.8 percent this year, down from July's 8 percent forecast, though a pickup in construction projects is expected to spur growth late in the year. India's economy will grow 4.9 percent, down from 6.1 percent. And Brazil's growth will be only 1.5 percent, compared to 2.5 percent.

The IMF advised policymakers to devise stronger medium-term fiscal and structural reforms to shore up confidence in the growth potential of the advanced economies.

Only then, will investor confidence in markets and public debt be restored.

"Unless governments spell out how they intend to effect the necessary adjustment over the medium term, a cloud of uncertainty will continue to hang over the international economy, with downside risks for output and employment in the short term," it said.

Americans' Right to Resell Used Cars, iPhones, DVDs, Family ...

Posted By Vicki McClure Davidson on October 8, 2012

A pending Supreme Court ruling could make it illegal to sell your used stuff without permission

?

Just when you thought the government couldn?t become more intrusive, there is a pending US Supreme Court case that could limit the resale of goods that are made overseas but are sold in America. It could become illegal to resell your used iPhone 4, used car, used clothing, DVDs, computers, or your family?s antiques without permission.

This could become a nightmare of unfathomable proportions. The Supreme Court will determine if you have the right to sell the stuff you own ? if you even own it.

Amazon, eBay, garage sales, second-hand stores, pawn shops, used car sales? all will be impacted if this ludicrous ruling passes. Nearly all electronics have some component in them that are made overseas.

From MarketWatch, Your right to resell your own stuff is in peril:

Tucked into the U.S. Supreme Court?s agenda this fall is a little-known case that could upend your ability to resell everything from your grandmother?s antique furniture to your iPhone 4.

At issue in Kirtsaeng v. John Wiley & Sons is the first-sale doctrine in copyright law, which allows you to buy and then sell things like electronics, books, artwork and furniture, as well as CDs and DVDs, without getting permission from the copyright holder of those products.

Under the doctrine, which the Supreme Court has recognized since 1908, you can resell your stuff without worry because the copyright holder only had control over the first sale.

Put simply, though Apple Inc. has the copyright on the iPhone and Mark Owen has it on the book ?No Easy Day,? you can still sell your copies to whomever you please whenever you want without retribution.

That?s being challenged now for products that are made abroad, and if the Supreme Court upholds an appellate court ruling, it would mean that the copyright holders of anything you own that has been made in China, Japan or Europe, for example, would have to give you permission to sell it.

?It means that it?s harder for consumers to buy used products and harder for them to sell them,? said Jonathan Band, an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center, who filed a friend-of-the-court brief on behalf of the American Library Association, the Association of College and Research Libraries and the Association for Research Libraries. ?This has huge consumer impact on all consumer groups.?

If any parts in this vintage phone are made overseas, it could be illegal to resell it

Regardless of your individual tastes or preferences, or whether you favor a uniform or eclectic design ethos, there is ample opportunity for anyone with disposable income to seek out the fixtures and fittings that are worthy of adorning their well kept home.

One potential issue facing home-owners, however, is the surplus of mass produced furniture that is currently available on the U.S. market. While many of these items are beautifully made and crafted from the highest quality of base materials, their unoriginal design makes them unsuitable for creating a wow factor within the home. With this in mind, consumers must be vigilant and think far more creatively when looking to add a finishing touch of unique quality to their home.

Mureta?s Antiques is one outlet that offers an opportunity for home-owners to truly distinguish their home, without forcing them to spend vast sums of their hard earned money. Including unusual items crafted from crystal, sterling silver and porcelain, it has also earned fame as an estate jewelry store that should provide special appeal to followers of Georgian and Edwardian periods.

Ultimately, the choice of whether to frequent Mureta?s Antiques is dependent on the level of ambition that you have as a home-owner, and how determined you are to create a genuinely unique and spellbinding living space. 5 Ways To Manage App Development On The Android Platform Without Going Nuts

The fractured state of the Android platform can make it difficult to manage app development.?Testing can be a bear but cloud-based services are providing new ways for developers to quickly see ?how their apps look on any type of device.

In its presentation at PIE Demo Day in Portland on Friday, AppThwack?s Trent Peterson said the remedy comes in automating the testing. Through its cloud-based platform, developers can get answers in minutes to how their apps behave on all the?various?devices and version of the Android OS that people use. AppThwack?runs a lab that tests every device that runs Android. They use that lab as the foundation for its service.

Here?s how it works:

  • Use the site?s drag-and-drop to securely upload it.
  • AppThwack runs your app on real phones and tablets, hits it with tests, and gathers statistics.
  • You can Vvew screen-shots, high-level results, logs, stack-traces, and trends in real time.

For more information, I?d recommend?Sarah Perez thorough review of the service that she wrote in July.

To get a picture of Android?s ecosystem, here?s a chart of its platform and the different versions running.

Since July, AppThwack has run?563,000 tests so these guys know what works and what does not. I asked Peterson what he would recommend to enterprise developers building apps for the Android platform. He gave me these five pieces of advice:

  • Developing tests as the code is written is important. This can be done using JUnit (Standard unit tests), Robotium (An open-source automation library that makes it easy to write JUnit tests that simulate user interactions), or tools like Gorilla Logic?s MonkeyTalk, which is especially powerful since it allows cross-platform tests (Android+iOS).
  • Since it?s impossible to catch every bug before sending it out into the wild, tools like BugSense and Crittercism provide a way to get bug reports automatically sent when an app crashes on an actual customer?s device.
  • Apptentive (currently in TechStars Seattle) provides a way to actually connect with your customers and find out what works and what doesn?t. They focus on making sure customers are leaving good reviews because they truly love your app.
  • ActionBarSherlock allows an app to gracefully degrade if the app is installed on older devices running older OS. This means on older devices functionality will either be simulated or replaced, but allows developers to skip the traditional in-code branching, which is very error-prone and becomes a nightmare as the market becomes more fragmented.

Enterprise developers would be wise to look at services that provide custom testing. Companies like AppThwack can recommend tools and strategies, or actually help in writing the test plan and scripting it. Testdroid?is another service to explore.

A service like AppThwack won?t solve all your problems but it certainly can make development a more streamlined task and keep your customers from throwing their smartphone in the river.

Private SpaceX Rocket Launch Tonight Visible from US East Coast

Skywatchers in the eastern United States have an opportunity to spot the launch of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on an International Space Station resupply flight on Sunday?night (Oct. 7), weather permitting.

The night launch will mark the fourth flight of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, a privately built boosterthat has made three successful flights since 2010. The rocket will be carrying the gumdrop-shaped Dragon capsule to the International Space Station. In May the Dragon capsule became the first U.S. spacecraft to reach the space station since NASA's last space shuttle flight departed in July 2011.

To reach the space station,?the Falcon 9 rocket must be launched when Earth's rotation carries the launch pad into the plane of the station's orbit. That will happen on Sunday at 8:35 p.m. EDT (0035 Monday GMT) at Launch Complex 40, SpaceX's launch pad at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

As has been the case with space shuttle launches to the space station, Sunday's liftoff will bring the Falcon 9 rocket's path nearly parallel to the U.S. East Coast. It is expected that the glow created by the rocket's Merlin 1C liquid propellant rocket engines should be visible in varying degrees along much of the Eastern seaboard. [SpaceX's Dragon Poised to Sunday Launch (Photos)]

The Falcon 9 rocket launches into orbit using two stages. The first stage utilizes nine Merlin 1C engines which will burn for three minutes, then shuts down.? Five seconds later the first and second stages will separate.?

Seven seconds later the second stage, which utilizes just one engine will be fired and will burn for six minutes and two seconds. The Dragon space capsule will then separate from the second stage and head into orbit.

So while the first stage should create a fairly conspicuous bright light in the sky, the second stage will likely be considerably dimmer.?

Kevin Fetter, a well-known amateur satellite observer based in Canada, notes:

"The first stage from what I see?is very bright source?of light.?The second stage won't be as good for causing a light show. So once the first stage is done, the nice light show is over. The light coming from the second stage won't be as bright, so not everyone will have a nice view."

What to expect

In the southeast United States, depending on a observer's distance from Cape Canaveral, the Falcon 9 rocketshould be readily visible thanks to the fiery output of the nine Merlin 1C engines powering the first stage. The light emitted will be visible for the first three minutes of the launch out to a radius of about 500 miles (804 kilometers) from Cape Canaveral ? an area more than three times the size of Texas.?[Amazing Night Rocket Launch: 'This Is So Cool!' (Video)]

Veteran satellite watcher, George William Herbert said: "It won't be the same as the shuttle, which is much, MUCH bigger and whose [solid rocket boosters] have hot glowing white aluminum oxide in the exhaust and smoke trail. However, the Falcon 9 engines burn kerosene and liquid oxygen, (which) are pretty bright, and will be brighter than an Atlas launch, which would be the closest comparison."?

Another veteran satellite watcher, Richard Langley of Florida said: "I saw the 22 May launch from Marco Island (about 170 miles from Cape Canaveral). Only an extended red dot nears the horizon, but neat all the same."

Depending on where you are located relative to Cape Canaveral, Falcon 9 might become visible anywhere from just a few seconds up to perhaps three minutes after it leaves Complex 40 at 8:35 p.m. EDT on Sunday.

After the first stage is shut down, Falcon 9 will be visible only by virtue of the light emanating from its second stage thanks to a single Merlin 1C engine. It should appear as a small, pulsating, fast-moving star, shining with a yellowish-orange glow. ?

However, those who remember sighting the brilliant glow of the space shuttle as it raced along the Atlantic seaboard on its way to orbit, may be disappointed in their attempt to sight Falcon 9, whose single engine fires with only a fraction of the brilliance of the three main engines of the shuttle.

Still, it might be worth the attempt to try and see what might be seen. As the old saying goes: Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Where to look

  • Southeast U.S. coastline: Anywhere north of Cape Canaveral, viewers should initially concentrate on the south-southwest horizon. If you are south of the Cape, look low toward the north-northeast. If you're west of the Cape, look low toward the east-northeast.?
  • Mid-Atlantic region: Look toward the south about 3 to 6 minutes after launch.
  • Northeast: Concentrate your gaze low toward the south-southeast about 6 to 8 minutes after launch.?

For most viewers, Falcon 9 will appear to literally skim the horizon, so be sure there are no buildings or trees to obstruct your view. Because it likely will appear rather small and dim, scanning the night sky with binoculars might help.

Depending upon your distance from the coastline, Falcon 9 will be relatively low on the horizon (5 to 15 degrees; your fist on an outstretched arm covers about 10 degrees of sky). If you're positioned near the edge of a viewing circle, the shuttle will barely come above the horizon and could be obscured by low clouds or haze.

If the weather is clear, keep in mind that Falcon 9 likely will appear to move very fast; much faster than an orbiting satellite due to its near orbital velocity at low altitudes (30 to60 miles). It basically travels across 90 degrees of azimuth in less than a minute.

And of course, before you head out to look for the rocket, make sure that it has left the launch pad.? Live coverage of the launch will be available online from NASA TV here beginning at 7 p.m. EDT (2300 GMT).

The launch will also be webcast live, with commentary from SpaceX corporate headquarters in Hawthorne, CA, at www.spacex.com. The webcast will begin approximately 40 minutes before launch. SpaceX hosts will provide information specific to the flight, an overview of the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft, and commentary on the launch and flight sequences. It will end when the Dragon spacecraft separates from the second stage of the Falcon 9 rocket.

Editor's Note: If you snap an amazing photo of SpaceX's launch of its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule on Sunday and would like to share it for a story or gallery, send images and details (including launch viewing location) to managing editor Tariq Malik at?tmalik@space.com.

Visit?SPACE.com?this weekend for complete coverage of SpaceX's first Dragon cargo flight to the International Space Station.

Miller's 186 yards, big plays spur Buckeyes, 63-38

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? The scary part for Ohio State's opponents is that Braxton Miller is still learning the offense.

Miller broke his own school record for a quarterback by rushing for 186 yards, zig-zagging 72 yards for one score and passing for another, to lead the 12th-ranked Buckeyes past No. 21 Nebraska 63-38 on Saturday night before the largest crowd ever at Ohio Stadium.

"I'm learning every week," Miller said. "They're throwing new stuff at us every week. I'm just trying to get it all down pat."

There were plenty of standouts for the Buckeyes (6-0, 2-0 Big Ten). Corey Brown returned a punt 76 yards for a TD, Bradley Roby brought back an interception 41 yards and Carlos Hyde rushed for career highs of 140 yards and four touchdowns before a raucous crowd of 106,102 in the Horseshoe's 90th season.

Asked how coach Urban Meyer responded in the dressing room, Miller smiled and said, "He was, like, 'How many points did we put up again?'"

Meyer said the offense has developed far faster than what he ever expected.

"Our offensive line eventually took over that game," he said. "We have two great runners right now. The quarterback is kind of ridiculous right now and Hyde is a solid back."

Taylor Martinez ran for two scores and completed 15 of 23 passes for 214 yards and a score but was intercepted three times for defenseless Nebraska (4-2, 1-1). Leading rusher Rex Burkhead injured his left knee early in the third quarter after rushing for 119 yards on 14 carries, but did not return.

"I told our football team we killed ourselves," Huskers coach Bo Pelini said. "I'm frustrated and disappointed."

Incredibly, Ohio State got off to a slow start but more than made up for it by scoring on six of seven possessions over one span ? with the punt return touchdown thrown in.

It was the most points given up by the Cornhuskers since a 65-51 loss at Colorado in the final game of the 2007 season ? also the last game of the Bill Callahan era.

The Buckeyes hadn't had so much production since beating Eastern Michigan 73-20 two years ago. The combined 101 points was the most in a Big Ten game involving Ohio State since an 83-21 win over Iowa in 1950. It was the most points scored by the Buckeyes in a conference game since a 69-18 win over Minnesota in 1983.

The win extended Ohio State's fast start in its first year under Meyer, winner of two national titles during his six years at Florida. The Buckeyes, still eligible to win a Big Ten division title even though on NCAA probation and banned from the postseason, are tied with Penn State atop the Leaders Division standings.

Ahead by 11 points at the half, the Buckeyes watched the Huskers cut the lead to 35-31 on Martinez's 3-yard pass to tight end Ben Cotton, but countered on Hyde's third TD run and Brown's lightning-fast burst through traffic on the punt return to build the lead to 49-31.

Burkhead, averaging 91 yards rushing a game, injured a knee on a 24-yard gain on the fourth play of the second half. He spent much of the third quarter pedaling away on a stationary bike on the Nebraska sideline.

Meanwhile, Ohio State was piling up the points.

Rod Smith also rushed for a 33-yard touchdown and Miller completed 7 of 14 passes for 127 yards.

It was the fourth meeting between the teams, but the first in Columbus since 1956.

The first half ? really the second quarter ? was the determining factor for the Buckeyes.

They didn't have a first down in the opening period, gaining just 17 yards on 13 plays while falling behind 14-7 as the crowd went quiet.

In the second quarter, however, they amassed 242 yards and scored 28 points.

Down 17-7 after a Nebraska field goal, the Buckeyes scored on their next four possessions.

It all started when Miller was confronted by Courtney Osborne in the backfield but juked him and then raced down the right sideline for a 72-yard gain, pushed out of bounds at the Nebraska 3. Miller limped off the field and was replaced by Kenny Guiton, who handed off twice to Hyde, the second resulting in a 1-yard dive for the score.

"When it's my chance to get the ball, I'm going to try to make something happen with it," Miller said.

Martinez, who worked extensively on his passing during the offseason, had been intercepted by Roby on the Huskers' second possession, with Roby bringing it back 41 yards for the Buckeyes' only points of the first 19 minutes.

"It's a team loss and we have to move on from here," Martinez said. "We still have everything in front of us."

On third and 5 at the Nebraska 20, Martinez threw the ball directly to Roby. His 8-yard return put the Buckeyes right back in business at the Nebraska 20. Two plays later, with Miller now back in, he had a nifty play-action fake before tossing a short pass in the right flat to Jeff Heuerman for an 18-yard score and Ohio State's first lead on a cool, crisp night, 21-17.

Despite starting their next drive with two false-start penalties, the Huskers came right back. Martinez was hit late but completed a post pass to Kenny Bell, who twice straight-armed defenders on a 74-yard gainer. Martinez stayed in and ended up scoring on a 9-yard run to make it 24-21.

But the Buckeyes weren't done.

Sticking mainly to the ground, they rolled downfield. The key play was Miller's 32-yard hook-up with tight end Nick Vannett for 32 yards. Hyde finished it off with a 7-yard TD run, bouncing outside to skirt right end for a 28-24 Ohio State lead.

After a Nebraska punt, the Buckeyes moved to a fourth and 1 at the Nebraska 30. Miller followed a big block by Hyde, skipped around the outstretched arms of a defender and coasted untouched the last 30 yards to make it 35-24 at the half.

A year ago, Nebraska trailed by 21 points before coming back to beat the Buckeyes 34-27 ? the greatest comeback in school history.

But not this time.
